Got a good friend going bare knuckle next month in Newcastle and I'll be there. Don't want him to do it but might as well help out if I can. Not a traveller either before all the idiots start. It seems a pretty professional set up! What are these events like? My pal isn't a mug, he had 70 am bouts and only lost on a split to Khan! Prison ruined his pro application, though...

It's got its place, I suppose. I do think it's a very muggy thing to be involved with tho, unless you fancy some good old knuckle arthritis each time the weather gets cold.
There was a fat, bald bloke from Leicester I think it was, did a documentary on it a couple of years back, I forget the channel.
I suppose with a record like that and no way of going pro it's only way mickey's mate is going to scratch that itch.

It's not Traveller style. It's 3x3 made at 13st 8lb. The poster looks professional. He's done unlicensed but wins in about a minute every time. He won in Haydock in 40 seconds the other night. The bloke he's fighting is top 5, apparently. I didn't know they have ratings!

The guy I was on about above was trying to re-launch (if that's the right word) bare-knuckle as an actual sport. It followed him to a couple of shows. He was a pub landlord if I remember rightly. Not sure if your pal is boxing at the same set-up. I wonder if there's much decent money to be made in it? I always thought that bare-knuckle was actually illegal though, unless they must have relaxed it?

He said he's getting more than a pro we know and double if he wins. God knows. It's all new to us.

If it's good money and decent set up why not? I've had a pal go down to Nottingham to do it James Quinn and Dave Courtney was at it...he said the standard was terrible even compared to a novice AM set up. Hope it goes well.

if the standard is so bad - and I can well imagine some poor technical fighters and some in bad shape, then I'm surprised this friend of mickey's can even get a fight. I would think a lot of people would be giving him a swerve. Those that go into it a bit blind could be in for a horrible mismatch.

They won't know him, he did most as a junior. He's been in prison a long time. You do go in blind, I've watched unlicensed, and most are terrible, but you do get the odd one who can really fight. The fights last about 30 seconds. Quinn does Traveller rules, Courtney is a div.

And yes, they'll get the shock of their life with him. He's been sparring good pros and the reason he's 3.5 st heavier than Khan nowadays even though they were rivals as kids is juicing, he's good to go.

I know Courtney's a div, Quinns set up now is rounds and a ring though. He wasn't fighting just organising. Just in case it was samme mob running it. Reckon your pals making some easy money though so that can't be a bad thing.

God knows, like I said, I'm new to this. The bloke who's behind it's dad was on The Kray firm! Eric Mason, Frankie Fraser done him with an axe. He's got a book out. Dead now.

Are you talking about him doing boxing or attending some kind of bizarre, twisted, Geordie, wank-a-thon?

Bottom line in these affairs is making sure you get paid.

It worries me not. But it can be hard enough getting paid in the pros at times and there you are dealing legally. Here you will be dealing with some fly by night shyster who's focus is running an illegal activity, making a quick money grab and then not being seen for dust.

It's a fair bit more organised than that I've heard. The majority of those fighting have done it before and have a bit of experience, they know who is trustworthy and who will try to chisel them. There was a decent bare knuckler from Donny ( ) called Joe Boy Gaskin, he was good at his level and made decent money but in the bigger leagues (Appelby Fair) he would get beat though he must have been paid or else he wouldn't have done it more than once.

No, but I know Joe Boy, he was married to Henry's cousin and bit my mates ear off. Had a drink with him at a funeral a few years ago. This isn't Traveller stuff, so should be a bit cleaner!

Didn't know they bare-knuckled at Appleby Fair. (officially like )

Been to a couple of these when ive had unlicensed boxers wanting to have a crack at it, Tomasino was the Nottingham one at Goosedale hall ? if so i had a lad on that, and as you said the standard was terrible, i was worried about the lad i had on it, had never at that point been to one, but he won the fight with ease and it was stopped at the end of round 1. Had no issues getting paid either, and to clarify to whoever said it, its not illegal, they are fully approved by the police and the council licensing.

Im not a fan though, its low level and any decent boxer will usually win with ease, although theres a few more tasty guys at heavyweight.

Some pro (legal) fighters have been screwed over on a repeated basis and continue to turn up. I've heard of fighters not receiving a cent for fights. Even world champions have been robbed by unscrupulous promoters and managers and that it is supposedly legal business taking place. So pardon me if I shed doubt on underground operators.
