Joey Archer was primarily from the '60s, not '50s.
I remember him very well.
He challenged Griffith for the MW title twice, in 7/66 and early '67, iirc. I saw the '66 fight live on TV, while at my grandparents house on summer vacation. Both title fights were very close, especially the first one. Archer quit boxing after the second Griffith fight, very disillusioned.
Well-schooled boxer with a good jab, but light hitter.

I remember griffth had him down in the 2nd rd, I can't remember if it was the first or second fight. he never had a punch, and just never had the guns to beat griffth.

I don't remember any knockdowns in the first Archer-Griffith fight. But I could certainly be wrong, only saw the fight as it happened nearly 50 years ago and my memory could be faulty.
I've only read about their second fight and I don't remember reading about any knockdowns in that one.
Both fights were very close, especially the first one.

I have just checked. There are no second round knock down in either fight.
Could you be thinking of one of the Griffith v. Benvenuti fights?

Look at Archer's resume; he excelled in an era filled with absolute killers and the fact that he did so with almost no punch shows you his boxing ability.

Do you think that he was good enough to be inducted into "The Boxing Hall of Fame"?

No.
The HOF should be about the true greats, not the very goods.
Having said that, Archer probably could have beaten some of the guys his size that are already in the HOF. I've long said that boxing's HOF has become watered down like so many other HOFs.
His best win was probably outpointing Dick Tiger (no easy feat!), but he never held a world title and didn't have enough big wins over guys in their prime.
Watch out you are encouraging an 'archer greater than Robinson ' thread

Joey Archer was a very weak hitter with no strength, skinny legs, and a feeble frame. He was a jabber and runner and very easy to hit. He had reputation as a good boxer. He had a very strong chin and took many brutal punches without going out. Fighting soft competition he climbed the ranks like Sean O'Grady. Unlike O'Grady he beat a couple of top fighters because they were raw swingers. I didn't think he really beat them, but he came away with the decisions.
He lost 3 in a row to the inept punch bag Don Fullmer, and to Welterweight turned Middleweight Emile Griffith. Archer was in his prime years, but quit the ring after those 3 defeats and never came back.

Archer was a very popular fighter in New York and as a result he had several decisions there go his way that I thought he lost. He had a sense of entitlement that was nauseating. He won all of these close decisions and then when he fights Griffith (equally popular in NY) and loses a close decision he quits.

you forgot the part where he looks like he could have been a cast member of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER

Joey Archer wouldn't have made the acting cut for Leave it to Beaver... He wasn't young enough to play Wally or the Beaver... Wasn't old enough to play Ward Cleaver the father... Wasn't pretty enough to play June Cleaver the mother... He might have played the troubled, wayward cousin who was out of a job and stayed in a back room until he got back on his feet... "Joey, how did the job search go today?"
That was one of my favorite shows as a kid... Typical small town 50's family.
