Cotto Was Cheated Out of The P4P #1

Mayweather retired....those damn Margarito handwraps controversy ruined Cotto's chances he was ONE step away from claiming the BEST P4P
fighter in boxing in 2008. I'm bringing this up because I don't hear boxing people talk about this but yeah Cotto was about to claim the #1 spot
in boxing until Margarito cheated him out of it. This is the fight where Cotto peaked in my opinion his acuracy, timing, and body shots the way he
placed his punches is the best I have ever seen of MIguel. A pure surgeon. In his prime Cotto is my absolute favorite over the past 20yrs or so...
He's like the that hitman that shot Montana in the back. Cotto's prime is totally underappreciated.

In 2008, Martinez would demolish Cotto.

I am forced to agree that Cotto's career was badly damaged by the Cheato incident. P4p number 1? Possible. The Cotto who fought Pac had not recovered from the Cheato beating, IMO.

This is the most ridiculous opinion I've ever read on this site. Miguel Cotto is the most OVERRATED boxer in the history of the sport. Here we are talking about a guy that lost every big fight he's ever been in besides one lucky fight against a guy almost 40 years old with bad knees. He just happened to have the luck of the draw on that particular night. The Margarito fight was unfortunate and he did take a hellacious beating but that fight resembled the second fight exactly and if it wasn't for the eye socket Manny knocked out of Margarito's head the fight before, I think Margarito ends up knocking him out again.
So wait, after Cotto beat a beast like Alfonso Gomez, you think that should have entitled him to the P4P top ranking? Or was it the Zab Judah huge win. OH wait, I see it now. He beat Urkal. That's probably the most famous guy Cotto's beaten in his career and that guy was an actor with thick glasses and suspenders.
Give me a break with this Cotto crap. Let me guess, you are of Puerto Rican dissent? Is that what it is?

Miguel Cotto is light years from being "the most overrated boxer in the history of the sport." However, you are the Boxrec Forum champion of exaggeration.

you make sense. i never think he was at any time the best boxer in the world. cause guys like manny existed, marquez was also in his prime back than. but cotto was up there and with a dominant win over margarito, he would have been undefeated, with wins over margarito, mosley and a lot of guys with undefeated records. but like i said, manny was prime during that period, was koing hatton and simply looked and was the best boxer in the world. floyd was in vacation and thats that.

Bnov may be on to something. I think that loss really hurt Cotto mentally. For me, it was evident in the Clottey fight. He should have done much better in that bout.

Neither would Pac or FMJ if they had been bludgeoned by plaster casts.

Floyd would never have allowed Margarito to land on him - loaded gloves or not.

That's not really the point though, is it.
The point is, whether Cotto vs Margarito turned out as it did or not, he's not as good as Manny, wouldn't have been as good as Manny.
Hypotheticals about what might have happened if Manny got hit by a plaster cast or a truck for that matter are neither here nor there. He didn't.
And the fact that Cotto did doesn't suddenly make him a level above, doesn't suddenly bridge the gap between himself and Pacquiao.
I lost a fight once because a guy smashed a pint tumbler over my head, but i'm telling you, if that never happened I'd be champion of the world by now

Absolute nonsense.
Pac was hurt to the body by a Cheato on the downside without plaster fists. Cheato at the top of his game with plaster bats would have ended Pac, just as he would have ended SSM.
Cotto was nowhere near the same after Cheato. If the reverse had been the case, and Pac was coming off being beaten with bats, Cotto would have ktfo Pac and would have been p4p #1. Then FMJ would have found a weak rationale to avoid him.

Wild guess . . . Because you still have that gaffe in your gut at the end of high test line.

Again all purely hypothetical. We can go through any nummber of theorys and possible outcomes, the evidence I'm going on is the evidence I saw with my eyes.... The Pacquiao of 2008/9 was better than any version of Cotto, throughout his career (And I say this as someone who is a fully paid up member of the Cotto nuthugger club, he ranks among my favourite modern day fighters)
Did the beating from Margarito effect Cotto going forward? Possibly.
Would the same thing have happened had Pacquiao been on the recieving end from Margarito? Possibly
Heres a hypothetical for you. Had neither man faced a cheating Margarito, who would have won a prime vs prime Pacquiao vs Cotto, no impairments, no lasting effects from grueling beat downs, just the 2 of them in the ring at their best, in their physical and mental peak?
Manny wins it for me every time.
Cotto is a fantastic fighter but he has never been good enough to be ranked the no1 p4p on the planet, Never!
Pacquiao on the other hand was. And not just because Floyd retired, for me Manny went through a period where he looked close to invinsible. A period where I still believe he would have gotten to Floyd had they fought back then and beaten him. A period where he would have meritted the no1 slot even when Floyd was active and had he been during his brief "retirement"

Cotto v Pac without the cheato beating would have been an amazing fight. Unfortunately it did not happen that way

The way people carry on about Cotto and put him on such a high pedestal , he's close to being most overrated
In his prime he was struggling with Paulie and old Mosley
