A fight that could have happened... Both at or near peak. No injuries, no excuses. Twelve rounds. Who's your pick??

I'll go with Jerry on points, assuming he uses his superior boxing ability and doesn't let himself get drawn into some kind of crude, awkward struggle
with Oscar.

I could see one or both hitting the deck for a shortish count in this one, but it should go the distance.

Stylistically, I see it as a rerun of Quarry vs. Chuvalo -- except Bonavena, although tough, didn't have George's resilience under sustained pressure. Chuvalo was behind on points when he rallied to stop Quarry, but I don't see Oscar willing himself into orchestrating the same kind of comeback. Quarry consistently beats him to the punch, wears him down ... and stops him late.

In two tries, a relentless machine like Joe Frazier could not wear down Bonavena enough to stop him, but the less busy Jerry Quarry does?

Doesn't compute, imo.

I do think Jerry wins a decision, but Bonavena would have some strong moments.

p.s. In case Ali-Bonavena gets brought up as an example of Oscar being stopped, I've always considered that somewhat of a fluke. It was one legitimate knockdown followed very quickly by two questionable ones, with Ali not going to a neutral corner and an off-balance Oscar having little chance to fully set himself before Ali jumped him. The ref lost control of that situation by allowing Ali free rein. Bonavena wasn't helpless, but the three knockdown rule did him in.

Yancey don't forget Ali knocked him out ;-)

Could go either way, but I think Jerry beats Oscar by a 6-5-1 verdict. He had a little more in the tank than Bonavena.

I'd have favored Quarry in a close one.

It was a 50 50 chances for either fighter to win and they both fought 4 common champions of Ali, Frazier, Patterson and Ellis. If Quarry box and counter Oscar throughout the fight, he would win a decision, while he was unable to knockout Oscar who had a great chin. If Oscar catch Quarry off the ropes and hit Jerry with powerful punches that caused a cut, then it would be a stoppage win. This was the what if scenario in their fight during the golden age of the heavyweights. :TU:

He had his bad luck moment with Chuvalo....it would not repeat itself with Bonavena.
