Waleed Din will fight for a major title in just his eighth pro contest, with promoter Dennis Hobson securing a shot at the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title for the highly-rated Sheffield fighter.
Din is set to face Sunderland-based Thomas Essomba for the coveted belt and, with a date set to be confirmed soon, the fight is likely to be staged early October at the Magna Centre in Rotherham and televised live on free-to-air digital channel, Spike TV.
Although not having his first amateur bout until he was 17, Din took the unpaid code by storm, winning the 2013 senior ABA light-flyweight title. Turning pro the following year, the 22-year-old has raced to 7-0 - knocking out five opponents in the process - and could be the Steel City’s next big boxing star.
Essomba though will undoubtedly be a tough test for the upcoming Din. The Cameroonian, managed by top North East promoter and manager Phil Jeffries, captained his country’s boxing team at the 2012 London Olympic Games and is on a four-fight winning streak since relocating to Wearside.
“This opportunity has come along, and Waleed wants the big fights and to get to the top as soon as possible,” said Hobson, pictured with Din and co-promoter Asif Vali. “It’s a fantastic fight, Thomas got a controversial split decision in the amateurs against Waleed but they’re pros now and it will be an absolute cracker. It’s a great opportunity for both of them, it’s a terrific title for whoever wins to develop onto the international scene.
“I really rate Waleed and think he could be world class. Some people might say it’s a bit soon but there are only so many learning fights you can have as a flyweight. It’s great to be working with Jaffa [Phil Jeffries], he’s my pal but on the night we’ll be daggers at each other and there’ll be a bit of banter. He really believes in Thomas and is very confident that he will do a number on Waleed. We’ll have a drink afterwards but let’s get it on and may the best man win!”

I have boxed waleed 3 x ama/pro he is a very good fighter - hard to hit and when u miss he takes his chances

Good stuff A young crop of Flyweights coming through aswell what's good is they usually have title fights pretty early due to lack of opponents. Satchel was British and Commonwealth champ after 9 fights.

jay harris was qaulity aswell but he's not of a super fly/bantam

only thing that might hold waleed back is the fact he's a natural fly so kids weighing in day before might have a fair bit weight on him

I meant he's a natural flyweight - so when he comes to day before weigh in the guy in the other corner may well have a canny weight advantage on him
