Noticed a few posts recently where the subject of the film Rocky has been raised. Obviously for many folks here this was an important film, not to mention for the sport itself. For some it begain their involvement in boxing, for others it sparked their interest.

So i thought maybe we should have a dedicated Rocky thread in homage to the Itallian Stallion himself!!

So what dyou think of the film(s) then, enjoyable? fave bits? fave characters? should rocky have won the first figth against Creed? should the ref have stopped it after the first knockdown? is Rocky a credible opponent for Audley Harrison? is Adriane worth a poke ( you know what i mean here. get her away from the pet shop, lose the hat and the glasses, bit of make up etc?) was burgess meredith better as mickey or the penguin? why does the guy who plays paulie always always have the same part in evey film hes ever made (ala joe pesci), should rocky now seriously be considering a comeback at his advanced years and with his reputed brain anomolies? will don king look for options? was mr T really badder than a peak tyson? how come Drago never tested positive for all those drugs?

my favourite bit is toward the end of the first film. end of the fight, both carried back to the corner, Creed shouts " aint gonna be no rematch", rocky replies "dont want one".

i know theres been other films and better ones but Rocky has something which has genuinly captured the publics imagination!

The first movie is by far the best, IMO. Love Smokin' Joe Frazier making his special guest appearance in that funky lime-green polyester suit. Ah, the 70s...

Anyone have that picture of Smokin' Joe in his groovy pedal pushers and clogs? I think he was on a trip to London at the time.

By the way, does anyone know if the Mickey character was based on someone real? I was thinking Ray Arcel or someone?

The first movie was great, in hindisight it seems like it always used to be on the telly when I was a little kid, I can remember watching it so many times but maybe that is just that-hindsight.
That was before I'd ever seen real boxing and I guess I took something from the film which stuck with me when I fell for the sport. I didn't become an avid fan until I was an adult, though I always felt like I loved boxing, probably because of Rocky.
Sad but true.

I wonder if comedian Dave Chapelle has ever watched Rocky? :P

I think 2 is just as good as 1. It really feels like a continuation of the first film whereas in 3 Stallone looks like a movie star.

I & II were a completion of one story. it was originally one script for a single film that he had to agree to split to get financing. The second being optioned in case the first was a hit.

The rest of them were " so what do we do to Rocky now?" if they had not made them, those two would stand as two of the better films of the late 70's.

fave bits. Hitting the meat in the factory and the iconic leather jacket, hat and ball bouncing.

Got to agree totally, 1 and 2 were great films. It was a shame that Rocky had to fall into the sequel trap that seemed to dominate Hollywood around that time. The fifth film was just awful, Tommy Morrison becoming the best heavyweight in the world?

Best bit of the 1st film; The interview with Rocky at the end of the fight. The scorecards are being read in the background, while he just shouts for Adrian. Class.

It didn't help that they called him Tommy Gunn.

The best bit was Dulph Lundgern; "You will lose!" to Apollo Creed.

I like the first two best, however I seem to be alone in really liking the 5th one aswell. I just think it went back to its roots (in terms of direction etc) and is a good stand alone movie.

Whilst I respect peoples decision (and I know I'm in the minority) I can't understand people who dislike 4 for its glitz AND also dislike 5. Five is the complete opposite of four.

However, Rocky is the greatest boxing movie period and should be up there when people discuss greatest movies.
