January bout likely for Parker in Samoa

Heavyweight boxing contender Joseph Parker plans to follow in the steps of the All Blacks and take his talents to Samoa.

The world's sixth-ranked heavyweight is lining up a fight in Apia in January.

Parker (15-0 with 13 KOs) was born in Auckland but has a strong connection to Samoa, where he is a national sporting hero. Such is Parker's status that in his last trip to the island nation in December he and his promoter David Higgins were made High Chiefs.

They met Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi to discuss staging a bout in the homeland of his parents, Dempsey and Sala.

"The dream was that their son might one day fight for the heavyweight title," Higgins said. "Right now, that seems to be on track and they are watching their dream come true. In terms of giving back to Samoa, they'd love to have a fight up there."

I was hoping he'd fight Leapai in Samoa, but I've been told Alex wants too much. He's coming off 3 losses in a row - so lower your sights a little Alex and give the Samoan people a great fight!

He doesn't want any part of Parker.

Why? Great payday - great event for Samoa. Realistically with 3 losses in a row and 7 overall, who's going to offer him that kind of money for a fight? His title shot days are over

Well that's just over three months after his important fight against Kali Meehan.

Alex's glory days are well in the past, and with a potential bad KO loss to Joseph a strong possibility on the cards, would be the real reason why Alex has upped the money ante to price himself out of the equation.

A 40 year old Solomon Haumono would prove a tougher opponent for Joseph.

Can only agree. Not sure where to for Leapai otherwise?

I'm surprised Parkers team aren't calling out Tua. Seems they like nothing more than getting OAPs names to pad his record. If he's never facing any hungry young fighters then how do they think he'll cope when he finally comes up against an elite one?

I think you will find Tua is done. There have been some events in NZ recently where I'm sure the promoters would have moved heaven and earth to get Tua involved, and nothing resulted.
