Capper welcomes Jerkic challenge

A fight between two of Australia's bright domestic prospects could be on after the trainer of unbeaten Queensland boxer Rocky Jerkic responded to a far-reaching call-out from Perth's Wes Capper.

A frustrated Capper told thewest.com.au last week, before his third-round disqualification win over Joe Rea, that he was desperate to face anyone in the domestic top 10, including middleweight champion Dwight Ritchie.

"I want a crack at anyone in the (domestic) top 10, I will take any of them," he said.

"I don't care who it is, I don't care who the promoter is, I want a crack at the Aussie title. If it means I'm going to have to upset a few people then so be it."

Capper (11-1) also said he would give his purse to whoever beat him.

After his win over Rea, Capper repeated his appeal on promoter CDL Boxing's live stream, adding that he would have no issue going in with a light-middleweight.

That brought a response from Jerkic's trainer Rob Fogarty, who said his 11-0 fighter was willing to take on "the Decappertator".

"I've got a lot of respect for Wes as he is a true warrior, he's fought and been successful in all disciplines," he wrote.

"Now Wes is finding it hard to get matched. So if Dwight won't fight you mate, Rocky will put his hand up if someone wants to put it on in October."

Capper, who is back with former trainer Habby Heske but does not have a manager, said he would be keen to fight Australia's No.1 light-middleweight contender but accepted it might not be easy to arrange for next month.

"I will fight him 100 per cent," Capper said.

"He's a very good boxer and I know he wouldn't come to run. That's what people want to see and it doesn't surprise me that he's put his hand up.

"I know he's a junior-middleweight but I'm sure we could come to some agreement on weight.

"To fight in October, that's not going to be a quick, easy fix, but let's see.

"I am booked to fight back in the US in October but negotiations can be done, so long as it's on even ground.

"They'll want to fight on their show. I want to fight on our show, but I'm also happy to fight on neutral ground.

"Sometimes if you don't choose your promoter right, then you might not get the right decision. So you have to be smart about it, unless you are an idiot."

Capper said if a fight could not be arranged for next month then later in the year would still be an option.

"November, December, I don't care," he said.

Went on an amateur trip with Rocky a fair few years ago and he is a real talent. I think any prospects on the Aussie scene will struggle to beat the Rock, but these are the fights that need to happen for both men to go ahead with their careers.

What Australian boxing badly needs more than anything else at the moment is guys - like these two - prepared to prove they are the best in the country. Local wars like this one are far too few and far between and the sport here suffers as a consequence.

Capper doesn't want to fight Rocky! Starts off with I'll fight anyone in the top 10. Then says (although I'm not sure if you put it here) that he'll give his purse to anyone that can beat him. Then when Rocky enters the frey, Capper seems to be looking for excuses not to fight him!

Jerkic may fight Shannon King for his Australian title prior to meeting Capper.

Jerkic vs King looks likely for November 28th and we might get to watch it on Channel 9 as well.
