Fury says he’ll quit boxing if he loses to Klitschko
by James Slater
Unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury says a lot of things, as even casual boxing fans are well aware, and the self-assured fighter has made a verbal promise to retire from boxing if he does not defeat heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko when he challenges him in Dusseldorf, Germany on October 24th.
Speaking with Sky Sports News, Fury said he will defeat Klitschko and rid the division of his “boring” style.
“If I can’t knock him out then I must be useless,” Fury said today. “If I can’t beat a 40-year-old man (Wladimir is actually 39), I need banning from boxing. If I can’t, then I won’t be boxing on because I won’t be able to achieve and get my goals. He’s been a great champion but [he has] not fought anyone of note. That’s where I come into it. I’m a 6ft 9inch man who can move and throw different shapes around the ring. He’s fought big men who can’t move and small men who are small and can’t get to him.
“It’s not going to be a points decision in Germany as we all know. You are not going to beat a super champion in his own country on points, so I need a knockout to get a victory, it’s not a problem for me. He’s been knocked out three times. Three men (Ross Puritty, Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster) have done it and if a man can be knocked out three times before, what’s to stop him getting knocked out again?”
Fury insists Klitschko’s “jab-and-grab” style will not work against him. But will Fury be a man of his word if he does experience defeat for the very first time next month? Interestingly, as reported by trade weekly in the UK, Boxing News, there is a rematch clause in the contract, so if Fury does pull off the upset, he will be heading back to Germany to face Klitschko for a second time. But will there be a need for a return? Some good judges are picking Fury to win, but most experts are sticking with the champion.

He says that but when he loses he will fight on. Just how Ali said he would crawl on his hands and knees and kiss Joe Frazier's feet if he lost to him. Needless to say he did not do it

He could always go the David Haye route, and say he's going to retire about fourteen times but not do it, then say he's coming back and not actually do anything.

It is obviously a load of bollocks because when Wlad fucks off in a couple of years Tyson will still be only be 29 and have another 5 years at least in the tank, for sure he will be some sort of a world champion in this time, maybe a few times losing and regaining

That's idiotic. That would be like if DLH lost to Whitaker in 1997 and quit boxing. Even with a loss to a boxing God, you still have a lot left that you can achieve. If DLH had lost and retired in 1997, he would have missed out on hundreds of millions of dollars and never made the hall of fame.

If he gets blasted out I can see him struggling to come back to that level. I get the feeling Fury isn't quite as confident a person as some think.

Oh yeah, I can see the resemblance in that fight to this?

Fighters don't half talk nonsense sometimes.
There's no way Fury will quit boxing, unless his sole motivation is money & the payday this fight will secure will set him up for life.

Fury probably made that statement to get people talking about the fight. Seems to have worked.

Fury also said before that Wlad is 100% ducking him, and that he (Fury) would kiss his boots if the actual fight was to happen. So get ready to see some kissing and hugging before one of them goes down. The latter sounds like its posted on a wrong forum, but what do you know these days

The only prediction I have regarding this fight is it won't be Fury's last.

Fury is like David Haye. He talks a lot, but we should never take anything he says seriously.
Win or lose, he won't quit boxing.

People that suffer from Anxiety and depression will never be that confident.
I think he is over reliant on trainer and uncle Hughie, he was like a little boy lost when fighting Cunningham without him.

I am not comparing the two in any way, shape or form but the similiarly unbeaten Sultan Ibragimov quit after losing to Klitschko at the age of 32.

with an average of one fight a year his entire career has been spent in semi-retirement.

Didn't he get knocked down then got straight back up, to take Cunnigham to a place were he had never been? then Ko'd Cunningham in spectacular fashion? then proceeded to sin a song to the roaring crowd? Doesn't sound like a little boy lost to me?

Ok, I'll be a bit more daring. Fury getting blasted out in 1 or 2 rounds is a live dog.

It could be resolved fairly quickly. As I don't think Fury will sit back and die wondering.

Wow that totally wasn't how I viewed that fight... KO'd in spectacular fashion?! It was more rough and untidy and debatably a foul?
And the crowd were more roaring with laughter than acclaim at a mighty warrior singing some kind of victory celebration...!

I am really torn here. I don't like Tyson Fury at all as a bloke, but I do think he has a modicum of talent. Klitschko on the other hand is a fine servant to the sport, some think he is boring, but he is an articulate, well respected champion. Do I really want Fury at the top of the food chain, or do we want another couple of years of Wlad?
Either way I hope one of them smashes Wilder to bits.
