Boxing friends. I want to start by saying I mean no offence to any of the below listed fighters as I respect them all I would just like to point out our current position in world boxing and discuss how to improve, my opinion is strengthening the domestic scene. Forget who promotes who.
I put together this list of every meaningful fight (top 10 ranked legitimate title/eliminator 4atars on boxrec) participated in by an Australian against international opposition(guys with 3,4,5 losses in last six don't count nor does anyone outside boxrec top 50) I've also listed domestic match ups that have come off and ones that should have. Numbers of rounds won out of a total rounds boxed x3 judges, Ko and Koby. I think this highlights a major problem with the domestic boxing scene as 64% of Australians contesting a meaningful fight will be kod. Only 20% will win and 18of the 46 fights not a single round was scored for an Australian. on average Australians will win one of every three rounds. Anything I've missed I'll add the fights and readjust the percentages

Australian boxers have become the Thai/argie cabbies on the world stage. It's because they all take the easy route to the big fights. Fighting over matched opponents to earn rankings that finally gets them the big shot.

We complain boxing gets no coverage from the media here, and when our guys fight in big international fights the media don't cover it. But is it any surprise why the media don't? When the success starts to come the media will but our record overseas is embarrassing. Why are the media going to get behind that?


We have talent here. We need to be fighting each other,not taking on easy beats. It's cheating and it shows them up when they finally get their shot.

Yep how can you fight for a world title when you haven't fought somebody ranked in the top 50 in your weight class.

Adam. I dont agree with your comments re aussies are becoming the Thais of World boxing. Thailand is a far stronger boxing country than us. We just see the local Bangkok Cab drivers here and not there real fighter.

Punching below our weight id say when you can't win one of 63 scored rounds is hardly call that above anyone's weight

Back in the days when the progression was state title, national title and then if you were good enough, Commonwealth tile, by the time our boxers got world title shots they were tested and prepared.

The contrast these days is boxers are in many cases able to avoid quality opponents all the way up to a world title shot because there are so many belts available.

Take a look at Mark de Mori as a typical example of the flawed system. He has never beaten anything like a world ranked opponent. Yet until recently was rated top 10 and 15 by a few different organisations. So potentially he could have landed a world title shot, and then got slaughtered like many of our other fighters who took somewhat similar paths.

Too right and then these guys complain the media won't get behind them or they can't get sponsors but why would they?

A kid that grew up eating flour and water pancakes for dinner in a small poor Welsh mining town or London council estate will likely fight harder then a kid who grew up carefree in the Australian suburbs.

Likewise a Mexican who knows his family won't eat that night unless he wins.

An old saying from the depression era of boxing, was:

A hungry fighter is the best fighter!

Fact is the Regional titles which give you a world ranking have taken over to the point where you dont need to fight the best in your own backyard first to be considered worthy of a world ranking or even world title fight. You simply gotta beat the guy selected for you to 'earn' your world ranking then sit back at let the rest take care of itself

So you can by pass State, National and Commonwealth titles straight to the "big" guy.

That has to have a lot to do with it.

Having neutral judges wasn't enough to get Jack Asis over the line in Johannesburg, South African. Lost UD to Malcolm Klassen in their IBO super featherweight title fight.

Would love to see boxing go back to a single world title and the requirement to progress to that title legitimately - country, region, world (and belts like Commonwealth) essentially. No shortcuts, no money-in-the-hand to skip, etc. Sure it would mean no aussies would probably see a title ever again and therefore probably less money available for them - but boxing as a whole would be so much better for it.

You would expect several countries with their boxing strength to hold more world titles than Australia.
i tend to agree our guys take things way too easy before they get the big pay day. But it's prize fighting and if you have limited talent but can pad a record to get a big pay day (and your manager/promoter can) it will happen. I have such respect for guys like Zappa and Rocky katsidis for not taking this road.
