The link below chimes with what I've always thought, that despite people spouting on about 'bigger, better, faster' and the consistent improvement in athletic performances, fighting is not like other sports, and to my mind the men of the past were tougher and better than the current crop on average.

A good article. I think it is definitely true that fighters of the past were tougher as they had more and longer contests this would also give them the advantage of more ring time and ultimately you get fit for fighting by fighting. However modern science and nutrition probably means todays fighters are bigger and stronger.
