Apparently John McDermott is being lined up to defend his English heavyweight title against Hughie Fury. I will be amazed if fat John actually fights but if he does I really hope Fury gives him the beating of his life and rejuvenates this shamefully moribund title.

The Stewards decided to put out the above contest for purse bids to be submitted in accordance with the Terms and Conditions attached to the Board’s Head Office by 12:00noon on Wednesday, 14th October 2015, the contest to take place by the end of January 2016.

The Board has been very poor at getting a challenger for McDermott in the last couple of years. How hard can it be?

They've put forward several challengers but they've all fallen through. He was going to fight Ian Lewison last year but it was called off because of an injury. It went back out to purse bids in January but no bids were received, a defence against Dillian Whyte was also sent out for purse bids and no one bid. McDermott's had no promoter after Frank Maloney packed up, so he's relying on another promoter offering him a voluntary against one of their fighters, or someone being interested in promoting a mandatory defence of his.

Putting forward two challengers in two years is not good enough. The Board are useless.

Who else should they have put forward then?

Tyson, Chisora and Price are all past that level, Matchroom haven't shown any interest in the fight for Joshua, Whyte and Lewison have been made mandatory, Sprott hasn't won a proper fight for nearly 3 years, Towers went the Commonwealth route by fighting Browne, since then he's fought once and has been working with Adam Booth, Ali Adams failed a drug test and everyone else is too experienced. The only other option I could think of is Sam Sexton. There's not a lot of Heavyweights in this country and whoever they put forward as a challenger has to actually want the fight and there needs to be a promoter willing to put it on.

Mc dermott should have been stripped a long time ago but I agree the board are a disgrace there are actually a lot of heavies worthy of fighting for this title Lewison, Hughie Fury Sexton towers even Dallas. As for promoters surely Steve Goodwin would be interested as a headliner in one of his shows.

Now this should be entertaining can't wait for it!

H. Fury, Sprott, Towers, Sexton, Price, Harrison, Skelton, Joshua etc.

They should have put forward eliminators for lower ranked English heavyweights, so the winners would be credible enough to challenge for the title.

The Board doesn't even try to sort out these messes.

8 out of 15 of the British titles are vacant. The BBBofC are doing a terrible job.

Amen. The British title scene should be so much more vibrant than it currently is - not helped by the current trend of skipping it altogether in favour of world ranking fights mind.

He would have to get up to go to a kebab house. Maybe he uses a mobility scooter now.

It really comes down to promoters willing to put on the show and fans willing to pay hard ready to see it. Promoters need two guys who fans want to pay money to see. Who wants to see McDermott? How about Cornish Vs Towers? Sounds like the BBBC is filled with slackers with little interest in promoting the sport. How do they get a seat on the board?

They've done such a good job of letting bogus titles flourish in the UK that a lot of leading British contenders can contest titles far easier to 'manage' than the more independent British title. Win a wbo European belt and you can face whoever you want whenever you want.
