Judges

Not sure if someone has brought this up before but why do we not have 5 judges scoring fights.
It is still an odd number.
There are 4 sides to a ring.
And the man with the best view in the referee could also judge.
I know in England in some fights the referee judges fights.
This could be a stupid idea but it could get rid of a few harsh decisions or would it make more.

Unfortunately there is really no right answer with judging because it is subjective. Even in clear shutouts, it's hard to prove (without a money trail) that a judge is crooked. He/she can just say it was their opinion.

It all comes down to the individual doing the judging. I've seen some crazy cards from referees before too, and sometimes the best place to judge the action is not from the midst of it. I'm not so sure judges should not be watching fights on the screen on mute, away from fans and bias.

There can still be a national panel of judges authorized to disqualify a judge if they come to conclusion that a decision was wrong by a certain number of points.

There could also be independent ratings of judges. Even boxrec could have one.

There can be a 100 judges, but in 95% of the fights it's quite obvious who has won.
Three judges should make the final 5% clear, adding another one usually only costs money and barely matters for the fight.

This would perhaps in 1/1000 fights chance the endresult and probably even less.

"I know in England in some fights the referee judges fights."

They used to have two judges and a referee judging fights here in the US too. If they had five judges instead of three it would just make it a little more inconvenient for the boxing mobsters as they'd have to put six lackeys on the payroll instead of four, including the referee. Used to be only three needed to be bought. Of course you just just pay for one, one of the boxers, and have him not try so hard and/or fall down at the earliest opportunity. Boxing is not only the easiest sport to fix - well, horse racing is right up there too - but the violence in it has always attracted the criminal element besides.

Boxing won't budge from tradition so don't expect any changes to the 3 person 10pt must system any time soon. One thing that they could improve is to make these judges more transparent in these fights. When a referee makes a horrible call in the ring, he gets interviewed to see where his head is at. After interviewing the boxers in the ring, i want to hear from each judge and I want to hear them explain their scores quickly and why they came up with the verdict that they did.

Scoring's not easy. I've seen a bunch of fights that when i viewed it a second or third time, I changed my decision on who i thought won. There's no way to make it an exact science. I do think that if we increased the number of judges we have a better chance of getting it closer to correct though.
