I just read it. Nice. The great Ezzard Charles must be the most underrated boxer ever. Don't you guys think so?

I don't know if his fight with Joe Louis was Ezzard's finest hour, but it was probably right up there. Charles had many great fights as a light heavyweight. Actually, Charles natural weight was as a light heavyweight, kind of like Roberto Duran as a lightweight.

Charles was so vicious as a light heavy that he was known as the "Cincinnati Cobra," as he knocked out so many very good fighters. After one of his fights, the other boxer. Sam Baroudi, died as a result of the battering he took. Ezzard toned down his fighting after that, settling for decisions rather than KO's sometimes. The champs of the light heavyweight division wanted no part of Charles, so he started thinking of trying to go for the heavyweight title. So, Ezzard Charles was so good that he won the heavyweight championship while trying not to hurt anyone.

Ezzard was rated the number 1 contender in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions. When Joe Louis retired, Charles was matched up with Jersey Joe Walcott for the heavyweight crown (NBA version), and Ezzard won on a decision. Charles then defended that title 3 times before taking on Joe Louis. After beating Louis, Charles defended his now world title 4 times (including another win over Walcott) before losing his title to Walcott in their 3rd fight together.

Charles fought Marciano when he was kind of past his prime, but he is the only boxer to go 15 rounds with Rocky in their first bout.

A story I read someplace. When Sugar Ray Robinson was fighting as a welterweight, a promoter came up to him and told him that he could get Ray a fight with Ezzard Charles and thus make some big money. Robinson replied, "What are you trying to do, get me killed?"

Right up there or sure. He's given a very high place on P4p lists nowadays though.
