For the 39th time, Muhammad Ali will appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated when the magazine hits newsstands later this week.

The cover photo shows Ali in his prime, with the headline, “The Legacy of the Greatest Still Grows.”

The occasion is the renaming of Sports Illustrated's Legacy Award, which Ali will receive in an event at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville Thursday night, an event that will be attended by, among others, George Foreman.

Cracktass will not be pleased.

Interesting that the magazine comes out on what will be the 40th anniversary of the Thrilla in Manila, one of the most heralded bouts in boxing history.

I wonder if 40 years or so from now, nostalgic fight fans will be feverishly commemorating the cherished anniversary of a Klitschko-Fury match, assuming it ever takes place.

Some guys are born to be legends, and others become forgotten pit stops.
