Dempsey by decision.
Faster, more elusive, and probably a slightly harder punch as well.
It's been that long ?

2 white heavyeights ?

yeah right who wins ? not the crowd.

I pick Marciano by a mid-rounds stoppage. I think Dempsey was quicker and harder to hit, while Rocky had a better chin, better overall long-term stamina/consistency, and his right hand was more powerful than anything Dempsey threw in my opinion. Basically, I think this would be a great slugfest resembling the Dempsey-Firpo sort of a fight, where both guys would probably be down, and I just think Marciano was always able to pull out those tight situations, and his greater durability and power would be enough to relentlessly batter Dempsey down by the middle rounds.

Who the hell is this guy? This makes two extraordinarily ignorant post I've read from him in one day. I mean, I hate to dis people on the board--there are too few boxing enthusiasts around these days for us to go turning on each other indiscriminately--but come on! I'm the first to say that neither Dempsey nor Marciano could handle the very best big men--much bigger than them--of other eras, but to imply that this would be anything but one of the most crowd-pleasing fights ever? That's just asinine.

OK, now that I got that off my chest...I think this one is a tough call, but I'd go with Dempsey in a tough fight that could easily see both guys hitting the canvas. One tends to think "KO" instantly where these guys are concerned, but on a little further reflection, I could see Marciano's chin carrying him through just about anything. I'd rate Dempsey's chin a little lower (but not much), his speed and skills a bit higher, and power is a toss-up--I might give Dempsey the edge there too...though again, not by much.

The fight starts, but then Larry Holmes' runs in, drops marciano with a smooth Left jab, right cross combo, he tries to get up, but he cant, he turns to dempsey, but he is far to puny to deal with the awesome Holmes, like a god he stands before Dempsey.
Dempsey has flashbacks...Jim Flynn...his Firpo DQ that should have been....gene tun....
SMACK!
And down goes dempsey!
Holmes KO1 Marciano and Dempsey.

Clearly you cant score fights.
Besides Spinks had something called Boxing skill.
Concepts completely foreign to Dempsey, and espically Marciano.

well maybe larry was due to lose a couple of close ones after winning contraversial decisions against a old ken norton and a novice tim witherspoon.
regarding skills, well atg like ezzard charles and archie moore had them in abundance but marciano seemed to cope okay.

Y'know what headhunter? At the risk of pissing off all the fans of the old school fight-fans, I'd lean in favor of Holmes over both of these guys too (Larry doesn't get half the props he deserves on a lot of boxing forums, IMHO), but that doesn't change the fact that Macriano-Demspey would be a barn-burner of a fight that--if they fought in the recent era--would be a slam-dunk pay-per-view bonanza, whether it was a title fight or not.
I'd tend to argue a bit with "The_Power" about whether or not Demspey had boxing skill--not a whole lot of them, to be sure, but a lot more than your average contender from any era, I'd say....I think it's one of the areas where he's a bit underappreciated.

I once heard Dempsey wanted to sue the creator of the Computerised All-Time heavyweight tournament they 'held' in the late sixties because the had Marciano winning from Dempsey (I have the results somewhere, but I believe it was KO 13)

Is that the same one that had Jefferies scoring a KO over Ali?

I believe it is, and it had Max Baer outpointing Jack Johnson.

If the ref lets it go in spite of the blood, then Marciano survives early carnage and a flash knockdown or two to batter Dempsey into submission in the 7th.

You stupid, ignorant racist. Marciano and Dempsey were two of the most exciting fighters in the history of the sport, both extremely aggressive devastating punchers with iron wills and the resilience to back it up. Marciano vs. Dempsey would almost certainly be one of the greatest fights you could ever hope to see. At worst it would be a quick blow-out or one-sided decision, but even in that case, they would both be in there fighting their hearts out and to suggest that the fight would be boring just because they're both white is just disgusting.

Regarding the computerised tournament, I never heard where Dempsey sued, but Ali did after he was defeated by Jim Jeffries on a 15 round decision. That later set up the Ali-Marciano computerised fight film they made and was shown nationwide in theaters across the county in 1969. Marciano was killed before the fight was shown and never knew the result, which had him knocking Ali out in the 13th round.
I remember that computer tournament well. The fights were broadcast on radio like real bouts and Marciano vs Dempsey was the final bout, with The Rock winning on a ko, again in the 13th round. Marciano also defeated Tunney and Jeffries, while Dempsey beat Corbett and Joe Louis.
Yes, Jack Johnson did lose to Maxie on points, which I though was malfunction on the computer's part, but who knows?
As to who would really win between Marciano and Dempsey, I give the edge to Marciano. Maybe just a bit stronger.

I don't pick Dempsey to beat Marciano, but the Dempsey's bandages thing is BS and it's amazing it's followed him this long. The idea that Dempsey could have done something like that is just pure fantasy. It would never have worked, and I could go into detail about it if you like.
