It's probably true for those listed, but it shouldn't be for all of them. Tunney, LaMotta, and Schmeling had other good wins in their career.

even though they had other good wins,
i feel they would be mostly forgotten
was it not for that single opponent.

For me, what instantly came to my mind was: Billy Conn
And that great fight when he gave Joe Louis hell in the ring.

Fair call. But Paul Malignaggi, and Vince Philips who had already beaten Tszu when Hatton beat him, weren't bad scalps.

No denying that but Phillips was well shot by the time Hatton feasted on him.

Many boxers often beat an opponent that gives them their fame. Even Pacquiaobefore DLH, I thought Barrera was the one who really gave him a chance to become a star. Some that gained fame from an opponent.
Antonio Tarver (Jones)
Provoknikov (Loss to Bradley)
Maidana (No one cared about him before Ortiz)

Micky Ward (Arturo Gatti). Even though Micky had been WBU champion & in a Ring Magazine FOTY prior to fighting Gatti, I think the trilogy really cemented his / their place in boxing history.

Gene Tunney was a huge star in his day with or without Dempsey.
Frazier was a gold medalist and champ while Ali was suspended so how could he only be a star based on Ali?
Schmeling would have been a hero in Germany whether or not he fought Joe Louis, he is remembered in the US because of Louis.

When I saw this thread topic, I knew immediately that some fool would come forth with foolishness by listing Joe Frazier.
