Just seen a news piece on FB about a 59 year old guy setting a record for being the oldest boxer. This cant be a world record as saul mamby was older wile still fighting.
The more worrying aspect was his trainer saying to the newswoman quite candidly that the guy trains in a sauna for 2 hours at a time in a Sweatsuit!!!

IMO trainer should be putting his foot down thats not healthy especialy in someone pushing 60

Is this Steve Ward? If so, this had been discussed on the Malta thread and I think everyone agrees that it is a concern.
The bout is scheduled for December, so you can only hope that common sense prevails by then...

It's not healthy for anyone, at any age to be doing that, whether they're a boxer or not. Add in that he's 59 years old and training for a fight and it's seriously dangerous. Unless he's taking on absurd amounts of water each day he's going to be more or less permanently dehydrated with how much he'll be sweating.

I know Steve Personally and have to admit i did find that all a bit odd

I think expe said similarly about mamby on the other thread. can only assume he didnt box actual pro, recorded...Maybe exhibitions, otherwise Micky rourke was also older but again his was exhibition. The record is 57 years and X days held by an american

guiness book of records needs to step up its not like this stuff is hard to find

makes you wonder how many of the records in there are actual records or just things people have claimed and nobody has bothered to check out.

On a more serious note that interveiw is not good for boxing god forbid if something happens im not even on about his age or lay off im on about the fact his trainer is saying he trains in a sauna for two hours in a sweatsuit thats just ridiculous

Bit more about Mamby's fight from it's encyclopedia page and a couple of others who may have fought professionally while older, including Jack Johnson.

Boxrec has the record as verified too which is a very good indication that the fight details are correct, leaving Mamby's age as the only question left.

Weren't Jacksons exhibition bouts? Let's be honest, I'm pretty sure at Mamby's age they must have been surely too.

But seriously, everyone in the know in boxing calls him Jackson for short.

Michael Jackson's name is - Michael Jack Johnson. Fact.

I believe to have a record in the guiness book of records, an application has to be made, with proof or an official adjudicator has to be present at the time of the record attempt, hence some records maybe not being as they seem.

In regards to Steve, hes a brilliant guy, and has my complete respect, he will win his fight and will thoroughly deserve his place in the records
