Considering some of his absolutely pathetic excuses in the past, I find that hard to believe.

Menengitis? Something didn't look right with Farnell, but surely he would have been barred from fighting if he even had the symptoms of this potential fatal ilness.

If true, then he shouldn't have been allowed to fight.

He had Viral Meningitis according to Boxing News.

Meningitis is the swelling of the meninges, a grey tissue that enclosed the spinal column and more importantly the brain. Symptoms include drowsiness and balamce problems. it can also lead to seizures. it has been known to cause brain damage it is in all cases potentially fatal.

Viral meningites is less dangerous than bacterial meningitis but can be a killer just the same.

with this in mind could i suggest that any boxer who enters the ring knowingly suffering from this isnt a warrior but a fuckin idiot?

Not only did he risk his own life, he seems to have had little thought on the impact it may have had on his opponent if anything had went wrong, the impact on his family and the impact on boxing as a whole. I actually quite like Farnell but he's acted like an arsehole here if the meningitis thing is true

Neil, I don't like calling boxers idiots - but I do concur entirely. You shouldn't fight with the flu, let along viral meningites.

However, don't (in most cases) spots occur as a result of menegites, didn't see any on Farnell (not saying he didn't have it mind). However, as you said its nothing to be proud of and no sign of being a warrior - its a sign of irresponsibility and endangering your life.

its the fact that he is a boxer and fights with meningitis that makes him an idiot

I had meningococal menigitis when I was 18, and was told I was lucky to be going out of the front doors when I left hospital a week later, yes, in some cases you do get blotches, I had them over my shoulders. And it came on within hours, the normal symptons flu-like symptoms, but I also had a stiff neck.

I was lucky that I was fit because I played football 5 nights a week.

I would think that if he had a serious strain he would have certainly have known about it before the fight

From the Menigitis research org.

Meningitis and septicaemia can kill in hours.

Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.

Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease.

The two forms of the disease have different symptoms. People who recover from meningitis and septicaemia may be left with a range of after effects that dramatically alter their lives.

Meningitis is usually bacterial or viral, and occasionally is due to fungal infections, although almost any microbe can cause it.

Viral meningitis can be very unpleasant but it is almost never life threatening and most people quickly make a full recovery.

Bacterial meningitis is more serious and can be caused by a range of different bacteria, although most cases in the UK and Ireland are caused by meningococcal bacteria.

Meningococcal bacteria can cause meningitis or septicaemia or both. Most people who get the disease have some symptoms of both meningococcal meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia; together these two forms of the disease are known as meningococcal disease.

The spots could be anywhere I think - for example on the soles of the feet for example.

Why do they always have something serious after they've lost? I don't believe a word of it. Monteiro was just too fit for Farnell.

Bennie, good question.

Its a difficult scenerio to be in. For me it is ALWAYS best to pull out if not well, although you will get abuse from boxing fans (Joe Calzaghe) and people calling you chicken.

So if you take the fight, you not going to give your opponent such a mental edge by saying things aren't perfect. Remember Larry Holmes fought Kenny Norton with damaged hands - he didn't say a thing, but I believe it was the case. Johnny Tapia has got medical certificates that he had a torn rotator cuff before the Barrera fight, but imagine how confident Barerra would have been if he would have said that in advance. If you compare Holyfield in the two fights vs Lewis, it is obvious that something was definately wrong with him in the first fight.

DLH is one of my favourites due to his proffesionalism and attitude, when he's injured/ill he doesn't fight. He has his critics, but it is only one chance you have at the career - you must get it right.

Here is a handy list of Farnell excuses that he has used whenever he has been beaten:

1. Takaloo. Blamed his trainer.
2. Groenwald. Blamed the judges.
3. Elcock. Blamed his trainer and also his new born baby.
4. Monteiro. Blamed meningitis.

I'll give him this, he is certainly imaginitive.

Remember Farnell was the one that requested this fight and stated that he would "knockout" Monteiro. I don't believe a word of his excuses. I'd have more respect if he just acknowledged that he'd been beaten by the better man.

Why do certain boxers (Farnell being the main one) always make crap excuses when they get beat, IF YOUR NOT FIT DONT FIGHT, SIMPLE, If your fit and you get beat by a better man admit it and know where your level is, Farnell is domestic level at best, he toot the fuckin fight and was due to fight on the bill anyway, against a welter weight or light middle weight a best, better people than Farnell have been beat in a boxing ring so he sould just get on with things, were the fornicate does he go from here though.

'Arnie' may be a warrior, but he's only an average boxer.

Is there any information to suggest he knew he had the illness before stepping into the ring?
If he only got the diagnosis after the fight, then I presume he is only guilty of attributing the symptoms to something less severe, like tiredness.

If he did know, and took a 2 week notice, nothing to gain fight, with a potentially fatal illness, then he needs to be protected from his own stupidity.

I lost what little respect for Farnell I had during the first Groenwald fight.

Farnell spent the entire fight rabbit punching and punching low ( few picked up by the ref ) then, when Groenwald gave him one back, he went down like he had been shot.

The guy displays all the hallmarks of a bully boy. Arrogant and disrespectful to begin with, then when things get tough, no heart to dig in. Then, when it is all over, it is everyone else's fault but his own.

He is a half decent domestic fighter. No more, no less. Every time he steps out of that sphere he is going to get found out.

Blaming your own baby is outrageous. What did it do - have the nerve to wake him up in the middle of the night?

Tried to claim that the birth of his baby a few weeks earlier had been a factor in Elcock schooling him for 12 one-sided rounds. This was despite him earlier claiming that he'd knock the then 10-fight veteran Elcock out within 6 rounds! There agin, this is the same guy who thought it was funny to refer to Takaloo as "Vindaloo". Class.

To be fair, I can't think of too many boxers who haven't had an excuse when they lost. It's the nature of the game.

"I'm not making excuses...BUT...."

There's always something that wasn't quite right. Sometimes even when they win - Danny Williams, ODH recently - The great Chavez used to do it everytime too.

i sometimes think with Farnell thats its more likely that his trainer wakes him up at night and his baby trains him
