Geale will 'jump a weight division' and fight at super middleweight after brutal defeat

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-25/g ... ection=tas

Daniel Geale is back in the gym and confirmed he will fight again in the new year as a super middleweight.

Geale suffered a brutal fourth round knockout loss to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in New York in June.

Looking back on the fight, Geale said he was weakened by trying to make it below the middleweight catch weight of 71.2kg.

"We knew we had the odds stacked against us and it was extremely tough having to get down that extra little bit of weight," he said.

"It makes a big difference so all you can do is live and learn and I know now that I'm not going to do that to myself anymore.

"I've decided to go up a weight division."

The 34-year-old from Launceston said the loss was a career crossroads, which forced him to consider his future in the sport.

"I had to sit back and work out what my goals were, my priorities, and I felt that I still had a little bit more to offer so we decided we were going to make a few changes," he said.

"I'm going to jump up a weight division, I'm not going to be struggling to make weight anymore and there's some big fights on the horizon.

"I love the sport and I love the challenge of the sport and I believe I've still got more to offer.

"We're looking to fight in Australia, probably early next year.

"I need to establish myself at super middleweight and then we've got some negotiations taking place pretty early where we could fight some big fights and possibly titles sort of middle to later next year."

Not sure the move up in weight is the answer for Geale.

He should fight Dunn,Murdock or Carr or even Quinlan or Caparello. Hopefully not someone too much under that level.

Comes as no surprise to hear Geale say he is sick of struggling to make weight and no doubt being forced to make 157 against Cotto was the final straw.

He was a small middle. Sounds like excuses for his last few performances.

Making 157 was obviously an unpleasant experience for Geale and I hope him choosing to go up to super middle isn't an overreaction to that. Sounds like he has been struggling to make 160 for a while though.

Agree with this, as soon as he fights a half decent super middleweight he will be KO'd or quit again.

I don't think Geale is jumping blindly here. He says he still loves the sport and is obviously still trying to achieve new goals. He has made some serious money along the way. So even if his foray into the super middleweight ranks fails he has the option of retiring fairly comfortably.

Does anyone know if Ray Kelly is helping Geales bulk up to 168. Ray was instrumental in getting Mundine down to 154.

It will be interesting to see who Geale chooses for his first opponent at the new weight. I don't expect it will be an Aussie.

Not sure how much sense that would make to Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing with Dunn having only recently signed with him to fight in the US?

It would be a huge event. But it would have to happen here in Oz to make sense.

"It's all about the money, " As it should be. I would rather see a professional make money and the only way they can do this is bums on seats.
Make crap loads and get out and if people will pay to see you fight tamato cans good on ya.

A match up with the winner of Abraham v Murray would be
a good test for our push puncher. :OhYes:

Hardly the fight he should be looking for first up in a new weight division and unlikely to be the one he's offer either.

Like most other fighters going up a division, ala Andre Ward, I'm sure he will start with a fight well below world title level. It would be almost suicide fighting the world champ first fight up.
