i try not to be sentimental about old times,
but when was the last time we saw at heavies
such display of courage and determination.

can you imagine things like wilder ducking
any reasonable opponent in the nineties not
resulting in a media storm? or leaning and
grabbing like wlad does repeatedly as long
as an opponent is not tired out?

i hope that finally some dignity returns to the
division. not necessarily great fighters, cause
that is not up to them, but at least some f^ck'n
dignity.

Bert Cooper would have wrecked Wilder.

Moored had plenty of guts and was a clever and powerful punch picker.

There won't be another with the heart of Holyfield for a long time.

Dignity is gone. Everybody talks about "risk vs reward", "X will do what is good for X", etc.

We were spoilt rotten in the 90s, Tyson, holyfield, foreman, Morrison, mercer, bowe, Bruno, Ruddock, Lewis, tua, moorer and cooper helped the 90s become an important chapter in heavyweight history although we probably didn't appreciate it at the time.

The biggest fight of the 90's however did not happen. . Riddick Bowe vs Lennox Lewis..

Agree the 90s were a poor mans 70s but its still light years ahead of where we are now, even the frustrating 80s was more interesting than todays sorry scene.

You're right there, pug. The heavyweight division has been straight up boring for 10 or more years, there have been loads of heavyweight title bouts I've just not bothered watching; Wlad in particular just does not excite me as a fan and the other fighters are just a full league below him.

The heavyweight's used to be the engine that drove boxing, its been so dire its a real shame.

heavy matchups on the verge of being made in the next year or so. i was sitting
next to a guy who said that holyfield was going to knock out bowe in 3 rounds
before their first fight. he kept saying, "look, i'm latin. i know what i'm talking about".
it's not until after the fights that we can look back on them and compare them to
other eras and i can potentially see a few upcoming heavy fights being as entertaining
as anything in recent decades.

I just realized again I am getting old myself... my initial answer before opening the link was going to be "just watch one of Holyfield's fights"

I wonder if 90's are really golder era in boxing compared to the current situation, or this is just nosthalgia...

It's not nostalgia. Since 2004 there have been two great heavyweights - Wlad and Vitali - and neither has fought the other. The next guys down from the Klits have been way below their level, to the extent that guys have been getting title shots who never would have gotten a look in in previous eras.

Things are looking better now, with Wilder, Fury, Joshua, Parker etc, but it's a shame these guys didn't come along earlier. That said, we don't really know how good any of them are yet.

IF Cooper landed a lucky punch perhaps. We all, and I am no exception, remember what we want to remember. Cooper had some great rounds and entertaining fights, but Cooper also got easily outboxed by many guys like Carl "The Truth" Williams, and quit against Foreman because he wasn't "feeling right."

Yeah that's stupid ... Nelly sold more albums than 99% of rapper who ever released an album ...

What gets me more is when fans use money as an excuse to duck an opponent.
I don't think people realize that being a fan of a rich person doesn't make you rich too.
