Just out if intrest does anyone know how much a boxer gets paid for defending there say British title??????? e.g skelton,,,,,Peter Oboh,,,,

just wondered what they got paid..

and also how much has ricky hatton made so far in his career... as we know it aint the best belt but the crowds he pulls in he must be getting decent cash..

all guess work.

Oboh may be on 15-20 grand a defence? i dont know, that would be my guess. Skelton, being a heavyweight, who is becoming increasingly popular is probably making in the region of 40,000 per british title defence.

Hatton is a huge ticket seller. He shouldn't be making less than 200,000 for each of his fights that sell out the MEN.

like i say, all guess work.

How do you arrive at such an emphatic nay to that Knockout?

In terms of how much you get for defending a British title, the title is virtually irrelevant. It doesn't matter what belt you hold, it all comes down to ticket sales and TV money. Look how little money Hopkins was earning until recently, I seem to recall he got way less than 1 million dollars for some of his defences, despite being one of the longest reigning champions in history. Hatton has probably earned more overall in his career than many true world champions.

Title belts don't put money on the table unless you have a profile which attracts people to the Arena and viewers at home.

I'd hazard a guess and say Hatton's on £250-300,000 per defence. I mean, he brings in the biggest crowds since Benn, Eubank and Naz.

You can't pay someone defending a WBU title at York Hall anywhere near that could you?

Like someone said... the title's irrelevant... it's bums on seats.

Yes I heard Hatton was on around £250K per fight a couple of years ago, which might have since gone up, even if his level of opponents hasn't.

Someone mentioned he's now a millionaire, several times over. Hard to believe, seeing as he's never even fought for a world title, but it's probably true.

How many boxers have managed to become millionaries without fighting for a world title? Olympic champs maybe, but not many others.

I wonder how much Benn, Eubank and Naz were on?

I undertsand that Naz had c£20million in the bank when he lost. That may explain his lack of interest in a comeback

Benn & Eubank, made, as far as I can gather about £10million.

All of this is from paper talk, so may be way off the mark though

i was using the whole title thing to just group the fighters into classes. Most guys aren't huge ticket sellers, so if they are competing at the same level (e.g. british title level) then they will be making something similar. But of course, the purse depends on a number of things, as you say, least of which is the title.

Remember he has to pay managers commission, trainers fees and the freaded 40% tax on that.

Lets say its £300k. He would be very lucky to net half that amount. I'd say he nets around £120-130k per fight. He might have a lot of tax deductable expenses which would bring his tax liability down at the year end, but he wouldnt be saving huge amounts as he does not have the overheads of a say £1million turnover company.

Yes, perhaps we should make the distinction between 'purse' and 'profit' in the way we would betwene 'turnover' and 'profit' for a company

I have a bit of boxing experiacne and i have heard from certain people who have fought for titles....5-6 grand for challenging for the british....15 g to defend it every time u defend it i think u get rougly another ten grand on top.Thats what i heard of course it may not be so....
Howard Clarke got 32 thou dollars for his challenge against Vargas and he ended up with 13 thousand after mr Cowdell(rip off) finished with him thats why he went to nobby stright after

We dont know if Clarke owed Cowdell any money

Fighters are always "subbing"

According to Reg Gutteridge, Benn earned £1 million for the Eubank rematch. Chris took the small end of the deal earning between 750 K - 850 K.

Definately depends on who boxers are fighting, where and for what.

Colin Kenna got £7k for fighting Sprott for the Southern Area title then recently when he was supposed to fight Long for the same title was only offered £1k even though the fight was going ot be live on Sky.

allegedly rang him up a week before Hatton vs. Tackie fight and offered him £10k for a 6-8 rounder with Danny Williams. So sometimes it comes down to how desperate promoters and managers are to match their boxers and give them a work out.

According to the new contract that was signed not too long ago, that was the figure given.

HATTON is on £450,000 per fight.
NAZ v Robinson in the Region of 800,00 then $3-$5 million for his HBO fights.
British title fights 6-15 k.
Nelson 200k per fight thats why he fights once a year.
Calzaghe 600k
Skelton will not be getting 40k for his titles more like 15-20k maxium.
Apart from those figures all promotional contracts are open to negotiation.
WBU world title Farnell Gomez 20-25k max no sliding scale increase.

As for cowdell and Clarke,as trainer and manager cowdell is due 10% of the gross purse, as manager 25% of the balance, which would equate to around 11k in total. So I doubt cowdell ripped him off.
Lets not forget Clarke got the Vargas fight off the back of win against a rated American who SportsNetwork brought over,Howard went in as the Journey man and beat the guy.

its a lottery all this purse business....
fighting on dinner shows will get you between £1k and £3k

I know Mark Baker got £20k when he fought Howard Eastman on very short notice!!!!!

Wayne Alexander got £80k for the Simon last minute challenge.....

allegedly doesnt normally take his 25% if its his own show..... SO hattons purse is probably just less 10% for Billy Graham

I would be suprised if Hatton pays him 10% 45,000? I doubt it

Who knows, I am sure there is a surprising amount of variance in what trainers get paid.
