Is there enough interest here to maintain a MMA thread? Any hardcore/casual fans that watch enough to contribute?

Aldo v macgregor
Weidman v rockhold
Maia v nelson
Overeem v dos santos
Van zant v thug rose
Dos Anjos v Cerrone II

Re: MMA thread?
I'd be down. We've got quite a few good, intelligent MMA fans here.
Re: MMA thread?
I'd definitely read the posts, I enjoy the sport but don't know enough.
Re: MMA thread?
MMA is gayer than a gay club. Greased up musclemen dryhumping and smelling each others a-holes. They're doing what they're doing because they couldn't cut it as boxers.

I'm kind of interested. I trained it for a while even though I'd never really watched it and bought some DVD's, then sort of lost interest.
But I'm getting a little bored with boxing recently and I'd like to get into it a bit more. I'd read the thread and tentatively post. Maybe enthusiasm would make up for a complete lack of knowledge?
As long as it's not like Sherdog. Christ, there is something up with the kids over there.

lost touch with it about 3 years ago, use to follow closely. Cant watch the ladies fight, I'm not against it but just not my bag.
Use to love some of the raw fighters like rampage and BJ penn in their early days. Also thoroughly enjoyed watching GSP develop into the monster he became. Incredible athlete and seemingly a good person.
I'd prefer and NFL thread

Re: MMA thread?
So... For the people in the know, I have some questions...
British fighters to get behind. Sorry, it's more fun for me to root for my own. Are we any good? Can we hang with the Americans and Brazilians? Or are we just also rans?
What is the best division? The one with the most talent? Who should I be looking out for?
Who are the figures I should want to get smashed? Should I dislike Conor? I feel like I may be able to find it in me.
Jon bones jones... This dude is back from suspension right? Who is he going to fight ? Should I get excited about it? Before Rousey he was the main UFC fighter I knew anything about. Is he a cool guy?
The other organisations... Isn't the UFC kind of a monopoly? When you have fighters like Fedor and Cyborg who don't fight in the UFC it seems like the UFC wants to fornicate them a little because they don't fit the UFC's idea of what is marketable or just don't want to play ball. For a lot of casuals UFC and MMA are almost interchangeable. Can this be challenged? Should it be?
Japanese MMA tournaments... They have less rules right? But the matchups are more circus like? What should I check out? Is it worth looking at that stuff? There's a new promotion in Japan I think. Thoughts on that?
Dana White. My first instincts on seeing and hearing this man talk is that he is a bell end and full of it. Is it possible that he may just... Go away? At some point? One of my main issues with MMA in the past is that I associate it with beefed up American frat boy jocks saying "let me bang bro" and White is kind of like one of those guys in a suit. I just don't like people like that. Aside from some characters (broner etc) boxing just seems to have more dignity to it. I'm obviously wrong , right?

Re: MMA thread?
Jon Jones is back, yes. Imo he is the best fighter currently active and possibly ever. Best list of opponents I've ever seen. I expect him to handle Cormier rather easily again when they rematch.
Britishf fighters, there is always Michael Bisping, hahaha. He goes alright, a bit long in the tooth now and usually looses when he steps up.
There are a few other decent MMA organizations, but with a few notable exceptions, all the best guys are in the ufc. They haveb ought out PRIDE, stikeforce and WEC over time .
As for Connor McGregor, I'm not surew hon to pick between him and Aldo, I know he is being hyped up by the ufc, and that Aldo is very good, but I've watched all he's fights in the ufc and he does look very special and driven. Who knows, should be a good fight

If you want to start watching MMA, definitely look to more than just the UFC. A really good British org is BAMMA and KSW does some really fun events in Poland (their last event was held in Wembley though).clopixolacuphase wrote:So... For the people in the know, I have some questions...

The UFC doesn't have a very strong British roster right now. Bisping is the best of the lot currently. I like Stevie Ray and Ross Pearson.
I'd say Feather or LH is the best division, but watch them all. Every division has lots of good fights except Heavy.
I REALLY want other orgs to rise to prominence to challenge the idea that the UFC reigns supreme.
Unified MMA rules have no downward elbow strikes, knees or kicks to a downed opponent (soccer kicks, stomps, etc). Most Japanese orgs don't follow unified and thats cool by me. I loved PRIDE rules. The only problem with Japanese orgs right now is that none of them have good international talent.
Dana White is a businessman. If you look at him like that, then you won't dislike him. He lies, bullcraps, and is slimy as a snake in a lube factory, but he knows how to sell fights and fighters.

I'd prefer the ufc maintained its dominance. One of the appeals is that they have the vast majority of the best fighters. So the best fight the best and their titles are considered the pinnacle of the sport. Wouldn't want it to end up like boxingpunchoutsb wrote:If you want to start watching MMA, definitely look to more than just the UFC. I could see that point of view. But then I think healthy competition is always a good thing. I've followed MMA since UFC 1, and the UFC's product went WAY down after the acquisition of PRIDE. And to be perfectly honest, what if's in combat sports are a great thing. What if's are what get people talking. When all questions are instantly answered, it's hard to stay engaged because there's no mystery. But that's just my two cents.thunderfromdownunder wrote: I'd prefer the ufc maintained its dominance. I've always liked BAMMA. I think to really appreciate the sport you have to watch more than just the UFC.
It's like trying to get into boxing but only watching PBC. There's a world of fights out there and some really good national and regional level stuff to be seen.

I've seen some decent stuff on bellator too
Re: MMA thread?
I've got to say I haven't been as excited for a fight as I am for the Aldo vs McGregor fight for a very long time. I'm picking Aldo, I think he is in a class of his own. The fight may be competitive in the feet but Aldo has the superior defence and speed so I am giving him the edge, not to mention we really haven't seen his striking when he isn't wary of the takedown. On the ground it's a complete mismatch Aldo has made legit black belts look like whites(the way he slices through some guards really is a thing of beauty.) The fact Connor is the betting favourite in this fight shows how much hype he has behind him though I haven't checked the odds lately and maybe it's changed since the Rousey fight?
Re: MMA thread?
In the UFC, we used to be the 4th strongest nation after the US, Brazil and Canada. Unfortunately, things have declined a bit. We do Still have Jimi Manuwa, Michael Bisping, Bradley Scott, Scott Askham, Tom Breese, John Hathaway, Leon Edwards, Darren Till, Ross Pearson, Brad Pickett and a couple more so still better than most nations.clopixolacuphase wrote: British fighters to get behind. However as others have mentioned, our own BAMMA is a good standard and Bellator is probably regarded as the next best to the UFC. In Bellator, we currently have the LHW champ (Liam McGeary), who seems a really cool lad by the way. We also have Paul Daley, Linton Vasell and Michael Page who are all regarded as contenders in the Bellator organization.
Out of these, Michael Page is the most exciting and could very well have a future in the UFC (check out some of his incredible finishes on YouTube if you haven't seen them already).
There's also a scouse lad fighting in the UFC (forget his name) who moved to Brazil to better himself. Comes across really confident and speaks fluent Portuguese, looks a talent to be fair.
We also have Saul Rogers in the latest Ultimate Fighter who seems to be one of the strongest fighters of this series.
All in all, could be worse, could be better. I personally miss Dan Hardy as he was easily the most interesting British MMA personality. I do think it will only take one British UFC champion to kick start a really strong batch of fighters from this country. We have a great level of striking here and seem to be improving our ground game too (Rogers' wrestling or McGeary's BJJ for example).

Ok, get some predictionsf or UFC 194 then.
Also v McGregor.
Honestly still undecided here. I know how good Jose is. And I believec Connor is more than hype too. No outcome will suprise me. One thing I will say though is, Connor best keep he's hands up, I'd he carries them low like he did v Mendes, he'll be on for a long night.
Weidman v Rockhold,
Weidman by KO , third round
Somethin about Luke rubs me the wrong way, seems like a bit of a douche
Nelson v maia.
Someone is getting submitted here. I'm picking gunnar for the win
