Good God worst fight ever. Klitschko looked like he aged 10 yrs overnight. Both looked awful. I don't even wanna see a rematch.

Look forward to Fury vs Joshua, Wilder, Povetkin etc.

Wladimir didn't look older, he just fought like a total p*ssy. If he'd fought at all he'd have won today. He just didn't even try.

Oh he looked old. Really old. His reflexes weren't crisp. He wasn't sharp or stifling with the jab as usual. Be real. He looked poor.

Wlad has been on a slow slide for a while, but I don't think he was ever that great to begin with. He was great at what he did - amazingly disciplined at following a game plan, using his size to his advantage, one of the best jabs ever and huge power. That said, the guy couldn't punch to the body or throw an uppercut to save his life and his entire inside game consisted of clinching.

On the other hand, Tyson Fury has been underrated by many on this forum for a while. People may not have noticed, but he has improved massively since the days he was struggling against the likes of John McDermott. His chin is average at best and he doesn't have much power for a guy of his size, but his boxing ability is (now) far better than advertised.

The reluctance to commit and throw the right hand was shocking, he even threw one and stopped it short and brought it back. I've never seen Wlad like that before.

He looked very old. VERY old. He was slow, lackadaisical, and lost.

The fact that you even suggest otherwise makes me believe you haven't watched any Wladimir Klitschko fights post Corrie Sanders. He went from throwing 90-100 punches a round to roughly half that and becoming infamous for being boring and holding as a replacement for fighting inside. He's fought off the back foot for over a decade. And in that time, he fought who as being close to this in size; Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach?

I like my fighters to fight. That was an atrocity.

You are correct, Wlad has not fought well off the front foot post Sanders.

He has, however, look spectacular against many fighters not 5" shorter, Kubrat Pulev being the most recent and obvious. That was what my response to you was based off of.

He forced those guys to come forward to him, and they (again; Thompson and Wach, Pulev kinda) acquiesced by taking the lead and getting jabbed to death. Fury immediately set himself as the guy on the back foot and used movement. Klitschko was completely taken aback by that. Fury's people prepared him exceedingly well. Wlad meanwhile was Wlad. He'd still mow down a Chambers or Povetkin with the usual mawling style, but he had troubles with a giant that didn't suck.

I agree 100%.

I will say though that Wlad's age had to have played a part. This was the slowest I've ever seen him.

How many heavyweights even consider lateral movement as an option? He was never fast on his feet ever and never cut the ring off effectively, even when he was Mr. Excitement Volume Puncher. This was a bad stylistic matchup for him. If he was allowed to feast on bums again, he could make 4 more defenses next year against the Povetkins, Glazkovs, Jenningses, Stivernes, etc. These big guys that aren't crap are a different situation. Although I expected more I am not surprised with some of the comments about Fury's win.

Maybe look at a little differently. Fury actually out played Wlad at his own game and got a decision win in Germany.

It may not have looked pretty but it was very effective and something no one else had come close to doing for 11 years..

Wlad couldn't tee off because Fury didn't let him.. Fury can't hit hard but he is great at sticking to a game plan and with his massive reach he is able to dictate the terms of the fight. This is why people quit on their stool against him and is the reason why he is not the lineal champ.

But but but Wlad is old, I don't think that would have mattered as Fury's strengths were not to do with Wlads age..

Fury did something I've said was Wlad's Achilles Heel for YEARS, but no-one did it consistently until Fury . . JAB with Klitschko. Wlad was a sucker for straight punches but his usually shorter opponents usually neglected the straight lefts and rights for hooks, not even trying to jab. And while Fury's height helped, it's not a pre-requisite; look at Mercer and Bruno outjabbing Lennox (who had a better jab than Klitschko). Ever since I saw a 45 year old Mercer puff up Wlad's eyes after he threw about 10 jabs in that travesty of a fight over a decade ago, I knew that was the key to beating him. STRAIGHT punches set up by stiff STRAIGHT jabs. That's how Sanders beat him as well. Haye actually did really well landing to Wlad's face but he was like Wlad in that he was too sh^&-scared to commit to anything.

Kudos to Fury; he said he'd bring it and he fought with confidence. I must say, I never thought the guy who fought a drawish fight with McDermott, looked sloppy and vulnerable vs Rich Power, and got decked hard by Pajkic would've ever smelled a heavyweight championship, let alone beat Klitschko, but he proved me wrong. He's an exciting, vulnerable fighter and brings some life to a moribund division.

They're not mediocre, and let's not act like there's a ton of guys out there taller than Wlad. This new guard (Fury, Joshua, Wilder) has some big guys but aside from Fury they are untested.

Great post. I saw Fury as a very live underdog in this fight, one thing's for sure - he has improved a LOT since the McDermott fight.

I'm not sure I agree about Fury being an exciting fighter, though. This fight was hardly action packed and his dominations of Johnson, Chisora and Hammer were relative snoozefests, although impressive displays of boxing by Fury. I'd rather watch him than Wlad, though, any day.

I agree style-wise he's not particularly exciting, but his shaky chin (Pajkic, Firtha, Cunningham . . even Joey Abell shook him up a little) ensures exciting moments, and his pre-fight antics have actually won me over whereas initially I hated him; it's clear by now it's pretty much a circus act.

Wlad is 39 years old now. He was up against a younger, taller fighter.

No fighter lasts forever.

Pulev is 6'4 1/2" tops (that's what he's listed as on BoxRec. Agreed Wlad has slipped, but Pulev didn't fight anywhere near as smartly as Fury did.

Is it possible you were thinking of Wach? He's taller than Wlad at 6'7 1/2".
