Boxing being boxing always has to confuse things by having up to 3 names for the same division sometimes,for instance Light Welterweight,Jr Welterweight and Super Lightweight

Me personally and probably most on here have always used the British catagories but i noticed recently Super Lightweight and Super Welterweight creeping in when UK cards have been on then i read last week Tyrone Nurse saying he has to wait on his British title arriving because their changing it from Light Welter to Super Light

Might be better in the long run and less confusing to fans getting into the sport,still i thought the BBBoC would stick to their own names

Agree and please correct me if I am wrong is it on "Super Lightweight" for a couple/few of the world sanctioning bodies and not universal in the states etc.

I'm pretty sure the likes of Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant will always refer to it as Junior Welterweight as would Buffer/Lennon Jnr in their introduction - unless it is for a world title which the governing body call it "Super Lightweight".

It is Light Welter, Jnr Welter is bearable.... Super Light - NO!!!!

They do indeed: WBA and WBC - Super Lightweight, WBO and IBF - Junior Welterweight. I've always gone for Light Welter myself.

As if the fragmented world title scene wasn't already confusing enough...

I've always found use of the pre-fix 'junior' to be cringeworthy. So although the change is probably someone in an office somewhere creating work for themselves to avoid getting laid off, if it removes the 'junior' from the divisions names then I can't complain too much.

The 'super super lightweight champion" or the 'super lightweight super champion'? Either sounds ridiculous.


Light middle, light welter etc are the correct titles in the UK. We have to say Super Middle however as light light heavyweight title sounds silly....or maybe we call it 'Heavy middleweight' or 'Large Middlewwight'

Problem is you can't call a super featherweight a light-lightweight

But I agree light-welterweight, light-middleweight etc are the division names I prefer am accustomed to.

Whoops my apologies i say super feather lol

The BBBofC decided some months ago that they would be using the names "Super Welterweight" and "Super Lightweight" instead of light-middle and light-welter. I think there was an article in BN about it, with Robert Smith explaining why. I can't remember the exact reason, but think it was something about falling into line with WBC etc.
