British Fighters Who've Beaten Legends...

Whether in their prime or not.

Maccarinelli just battered a version of a man that used to be Roy Jones.

Danny Williams in that lovely performance against Tyson (they other Tyson ;;-) )

Amir Khan reopening the cut caused by the baby headbut on Barreras head.

One of my favourite fighters, Randy Turpin, beating the still great (but maybe holiday knackered) Sugar Ray Robinson.

There's others but I have to go & grab another beer.

The Barrera fight was disgusting. Cut happens in the 1st round and should have been stopped much sooner but wasn't allowed to be stopped before 4th because it means a no contest! Khan was probably 12 stone heavier too. Barrera was still walking him down at the end though!

Mick Leahy also beat a faded Sugar Ray Robinson in Scotland.
Terry Downes beat Robinson 2 years before that.

Better discussion would be legends that were dethroned in their prime.

Some from recent times:

Fury - Klitschko
Lewis - Hollyfield
Hatton - Tyszu

I know little about boxing pre 1970's, but know Turpins win over Robinson was epic.

Wouldn't say Tszyu was in his prime. Definitely coming towards the end of his career with injuries and long periods off etc.

Yes, agreed, IMO no man at 35 is in their prime, perhaps a younger Tyszu would have been victorious, but still, he was the reigning undisupted 140lbs champion who was domininant for such a long period, it would be a crime not to include Hattons win on this list. Even though i had said for some time prior i think Hattons style had the beating of him, what he did that night was monumental and very rarely acheived by British boxers.

Wladimir Klitschko has no place among legends.

Not a single great win and multiple KO losses against B grade heavyweights.

I have a hard time using the word legend full stop, and even harder time when using it with Wlad, but its hard to argue he has not been a legend of his time. His long reign and dominance of the division for so long makes that hard to duspute.

Its easier to write him off now that he's been beaten, hindsigh as theybsay is a wonderful thing.

I feel the same way about the word "legend" - particularly because a legend is a mythical being or story and in boxing we are discussing men who certainly did physically exist.

Wlad was only briefly dominant, once his brother hung up the gloves in 2012. He lanced a long line of technically incompetent fatties until someone showed up and did what he does better - whereupon he chose not to go out on his shield but to surrender meekly. Compare his accomplishments to any of the men in this discussion - not silly statistics, which are easy to embellish in modern boxing - but his opponents and the manner of his performance and he is shown up as having no legitimate claim. I can only rationalise fan's bizarre defence of this cheating bore as some unfortunate need to finally have a "dominant" (though not truly dominant) white heavyweight champ.

Good point, Bobby Gunn is virtually unbeatable at bare knuckle level, yet Enzo handled him with ease. Was it one the biggest upsets of all time? I believe so......

Good call.

I know the OP said British, but as it's the Irish and British forum, Kevin McBride was a huge surprise. Danny Williams - Tyson too
