Conor McGregor/Floyd Mayweather Jr

In an interview last week, Floyd said the following:
"They say [McGregor] talk a lot of trash and people praise him for it, but when I did it, they say I'm cocky and arrogant. So biased! Like I said before, all I'm saying is this, I ain't racist at all, but I'm telling you racism still exists," said Mayweather.
Conor McGregor response this week:
"Floyd Mayweather, don't ever bring race into my success again," McGregor said in an Instagram post. "I am an Irishman. My people have been oppressed our entire existence. And still very much are. I understand the feeling of prejudice. It is a feeling that is deep in my blood. In my family's long history of warfare there was a time where just having the name 'McGregor' was punishable by death. I will give you a fair 80/20 split purse in my favour seen as your last fight bombed at every area of revenue."
So why do we praise a guy like McGregor for his arrogance but knock Floyd for it? I feel it's because McGregor's fights are the most exciting events in combat sports right now while Floyd's fights have repeatedly disappointed fans for years. McGregor wants to put his opponent in the ground while Floyd would rather get his hand raised without mixing it up. IMO, race has nothing to do with it. It's about delivering on a performance and promises. One guy keeps doing it and the other never really did.
What's your take?

I think you nailed it at the end - entertainment. People are fine with McGregor because he is backing up everything he says in a sport where you cannot possibly hide. Boxing is very different to that, and people grew tired of Mayweather delivering a boring outcome.

Both talk a lot of shit, McGregor backs his up a lot more than Mayweather, at least in terms of his fights providing the excitement to match his boasts. His last performance, against a guy widely touted by many as the #1 P4P fighter in the sport, couldn't have been more brutally emphatic.
He's also spot on regarding the history of the Irish, however, I'd say he's talking shite when he says they are still oppressed as such. Northern Ireland's problems are now little to do with anyone except those in Northern Ireland by and large.

Plenty of people want conor to lose, if he's undefeated for a decade that number will increase.

When you look at the roads both guys had to trek to get to the top of their sports, McGregor's is the more impressive to me. Floyd came from a family of professional boxers who clearly paved the road for Floyd. Conor paved his own way and the odds were heavily stacked against him. I don't know, I just find it insulting and ridiculous that the highest paid athlete in sports can complain about inequality.

I think Floyd has a huge chip on his shoulder, he's played the heel and the asshole for most of his career, and wonders why people treat him like the bad guy, he's earned more than any other fighter in history (probably even accounting for inflation he's probably out-earned Tyson by now), but he can't handle the fact that people call him boring.
Floyd wants everything his own way, but sadly for him, all the money in the world cannot buy you adulation.

McGregor and the UFC are desperate. It's not even the same sport but they desperately use Mayweather's name for publicity.
It's embarrassing really that 1 boxer completely owns an entire sport like the UFC in terms of exposure. You can smell the desperation off Dana and McGregor.
Mayweather should invite McGregor to the doghouse to give the kid a schooling with the cameras off.
And lol at his poor little oppressed irishman comments. Boohoo.

Why would they be desperate exactly? Boxing has been around in it's present form for well over a century, and as such has had a very long time to establish itself.
UFC by comparison Is relatively young at what, two decades old, and are doing very well, becoming more and more mainstream with each passing year. McGregor is a humungous star, and is crossing over from UFC into being a household name - something Mayweather never really achieved until his last few fights.
I'm never really quite sure why boxing fans are so against UFC, to my mind, if anything it raises the profile of all combat sports, including boxing.
As far as I can see, it was Mayweather who had the first dig anyway, so who is desperate? If anything it's Mayweather who is desperate to stay relevant now he's announced his retirement, and his last fight was an absolute dud of colossal importance. It's Mayweather trying to play the race card as an explanation for why McGregor is so well liked and admired, rather than admitting to himself that McGregor's contests are a lot more fun to watch, and that is why people love to watch him fight.

Mayweather made about 300m in his last 2 fights. He holds records that won't ever be beaten. He has over 13m followers on social media.
McGregor has about 2m. He'll lose sometime in the near future and be forgotten about. He and the UFC need as much publicity as they can get right now and using Floyd's name is a sure way to stay in the media.

Well why does Mayweather sound so bitter? Surely he should be happy.
UFC is nowhere near earning what boxing is yet, but McGregor is becoming a very big star very quickly. He'll probably break lots of records in earnings for MMA soon.

money isnt everything.
and if money was his main reason to box for him, than he should shut up, cause he did mission accomplish, but than do not cry about fans dislking your style of fighting, when you didnt care to do action in the ring, only $$$ in your mind.

Sure, but why's he still bitching about lack of respect.
I think Floyd is going to be increasingly bitter once he quits the ring, that he didn't get his due respect, despite the ridiculous sums of money people handed over, I think he still feels unfulfilled.

Reduce it to race like it couldn't be any other factor....a fairly common, unintelligent, and uneducated way of thinking.

Floyd was always the biggest prick in boxing and conor is a hero to a lot of irish people
