I remember asking him to confirm the scoring of a small hall bout, and I said - like a prune - "Oh really, you know that's exactly how I scored it." He raised his eyebrows and turned away muttering something along the lines of "I'm glad you approve..."

Their area council puts them up for promotion and the referees committee then discusses and votes on it

Good ref - Did Hines ever get his A* rating?

I don't think he is but I agree with the OP, reckon Bob Williams is the next A star. I saw him ref outside of London recently on a Matchroom show. Apparently that's a good indicator of them being considered when they're working outside their own area.
Also good to see him on the Haye fight

Thanks Spudder

Partly right; he would have had to go outside his area and reports would have been done on every performance. He is also given higher profile contests than he would normally do and they observe how he copes (David Haye as an example). As I said he is a top bloke; down to earth and does loads for underprivileged kids (look up Boxcleva -
http://www.boxcleva.net) and a fire chief climbing the ranks over many years.
My next prediction is an MBE and rightly deserved

Well done Bob on A star you're a good man.But when is that organisation promoting the long serving excellent referee Mr Jeff hinds???!!Jeff also a fine referee and a top man.

No disrespect but how Jeff Hinds continues to be overlooked worries me a lot.
I saw him working on the O2 show on Saturday night. The guy sitting next to me said the IBF & WBO have been requesting Jeff's services for a long time.

It seems as if Jeff Hinds will never make it to an A Star referee position, only those who must be obeyed can tell you why. Perhaps his face doesen't fit with certain people in office which is a shame as the man is 100% sound

Congratulations to Bob Williams, but a big mention should be made about Jeff Hinds, who is equally, if not slightly more talented than Williams, and of course has many more years experience on the circuit.
I understand that even with expressed interest from World Bodies about Mr Hinds' capabilities, the Board for some unknown reason continue to stall with upgrading Jeff.
This is a travesty.

I agree, Jeff is a great referee, just not quite good enough for a star.

As soon as you speak sense the boxing board of no control run by area councils the Midlands is the worst! Mark your card.many in board of control aren't boxing people but a lot of big egis evidence why don't any referees wear gloves!Richard Vaughan said to a referee you can't wear gloves people will say who do you think you are!pathetic. Also reports written in referees aren't sent to referees so why write them!Referees have blood tests but corner men cut men don't.jeffs a top man with integrity who speaks the truth and some little men don't like it!referees with board don't even get paid for two and a half years until board decide to give licence.so many good referees and good men now working outside board of no control due to ostracism from people who should support them.!!

You are fully entitled to your opinion but in my experience the Midlands area council is arguably the best in the country. Also Richard Vaughan is one of the few good guys in the sport. No-one is perfect but on the whole he does a great job. The Midlands area council has a great reputation in comparison to some other areas.

Richard Vaughan is greatly despised. He once worked fpOr staffs FA and was regarded with contempt. He thinks referees can't wear gloves thinks reports written on referees should be kept secret from the referee!Thinks boxing board officials in the Midlands can't be told what's said in council meetings! All pathetic and wrong. No representation for referees in council and don't tell me theirs a referees rep because he's a council member!!Facts boxing board referees don't wear gloves fact board referees have mandatory blood tests but cut men don't!Fact Richard vaughan believes and said reports written on referees should not be sent to a referee!what a joke.Have you worked anywhere where reports are written on you but not sent to you!secret little meetings yes there are a few decent people on Midlands but Vaughan's not one of them.!The board run a seminar for referees and a referee raised points and vaughan declared he d disparaged area!pathetic !

I don't think he is the best at scoring fights though, just my opinion.
