Danny Garcia vs Robert Guerrero

Tonight on allegedly for Mayweather's vacated WBC Welterweight strap,Guerrero aiming to become a 3 weight champ,Garcia a 2
Im not exactly bowled over about this fight if im honest, neither guy have been spectacular lately especially Robert who looks finished at the top level,i never seen his last fight against Aron Martinez but apparantly he was lucky to get the verdict after being put down, although Martinez since when on to beat Alexander so....
Garcia looked good beating Malignaggi in his last fight and got the stoppage but again wasnt spectacular,he's never really pushed on since the win over Matthysse but in saying that he's still unbeaten and deserved his wins over Herrera and Peterson IMHO
Guerrero will be tough and there to the end no doubt but i can see him being comprehensively outboxed

Guerrero is finished I agree, he's looked so slow the last few times I've seen him.
Garcia lost to Herrera I believe, he just got very lucky that night with a home decision. He's one dimensional a lot of the time but has that massive left hand to fall back on.
Garcia by late stoppage, hopefully it's the last we see of Guerrero.

A match between, if you ask me, one of the more overated champions and one of the more underated fighters. I think this is an interesting fight - I won't write off Guerrero just yet, but he does look like he is on the slide. So have to go for Garcia, but I wouldn't be completely surprised for the upset.
Guerrero vs Malignaggi would be very intriguing though - one that would be very tough to call. Geurrero would be the type of fighter I wouldn't mind seeing Paulie in with - not the biggest at the weight - two fighters that usually have to win on points to win.

Garcia on points is my prediction. Don't think it will be a particularly good fight, but hopefully I'm wrong.

It doesnt seem that long ago Garcia was just a young pup coming through fighting on all the big undercards, apart from the Theophane performance he always impressed me,i was looking through his record just there
In 31 fights he's beaten
Campbell
Holt
Morales twice
Judah
Khan
Peterson
Malignaggi
Matthysse
Even at this short stage of his career thats gotta be up there for wins against titlists and if he beats Guerrero thats another 1
And if there is a God then Theophane will steamroll Broner

It is impressive on paper, but I don't know I've just not been overly overly impressed (I mean he's obviously world class and all, but when people talk of him being top 5-10 P4P) - on paper perhaps, but I don't know I see him as one of the P4P top 10 contenders who is most there for the taking.
Morales and Judah were over the hill and Morales 1 and Judah were not that impressive displays. Khan - yes fantastic punch, but I'd tip Amir in a rematch. Peterson I felt beat him. Maligaggi past his best but he looked Okay.

118-111 Garcia,i really wanted to give Guerrero more rounds because he was starting rounds well but couldnt maintain it and Garcia got to work with the crisper shots,i had Danny taking a few rounds off of him,Guerrero finished well though and has the heart of a lion

By which I assume you mean Garcia is over-rated and Guerrero is under-rated?
I know where you're coming from but don't agree (odd statement but let me explain.)
I personally think Garcia is very good, has acheived a lot and keeps getting the wins, even though he often does it the hard way. But I don't think he's over rated as there are plenty people out there that think he's a B class champion. I know, I've backed him to lose more than once and been proven wrong. But there aren't many, even over on current scene screaming from the roof tops how great he is.
As for Guerrero. He's good, he was very good down at light weight.
When most people talk him down, it tends to be that he's too small to compete at the top level and that his best years are behind him. I can't argue with that, i don't think it's a case of under rating the guy by pointing out the odds are stacked against him these days.
He still gets his dues for being a solid champion back in his prime and at his best weight, as he was very good, so I understand where you're coming from there

Garcia is a very over rated puncher. His stoppage wins over Morales and Khan had him billed as a monster puncher. While his punches do carry pop his lack of stoppages over the last few years show he has to box more.
Guerrero has to retire unless he's to become a journeyman. I though he was shot on the evidence of his last few fights but he hung in there against Garcia. Should still hang em up though.

Hi Davie,
I meant over the course of his career Guerrero has been underated. Even though he has been a multi weight world champion, he used to get overlooked when he was a Lightweight.
With regards to Garcia, I meant overated by those who think he is top 10 P4P fighter, particularly the higher echelons of the top 10. Personally, I see more people who think he is that, compared to those who think he is some b grade champion.... he is somewhere inbetween if you ask me.

I had Garcia wiining wide but ive got to take my hat off to Guerrero for making Danny work for it,i never knew he had it in him anymore
Im stumped as to why people had this close,i thought Garcia boxed excellently for the most part,he was going going for the KO at one point but then seemed content for a points win and took his foot off the gas

Garcia has grown into the weight well and is a well rounded boxer, he counters really well at times and has enough power to keep things honest.
I think Guerrero has settled into being a game loser type, he is not a competitive welter, if he could move to light welter he may be able to knock a few over: he has had a pretty long career though and it seems he takes plenty in every bout now, no matter who he faces. If going hell for leather gave him such joy (in the last 10 seconds) he should have cut loose much earlier.

You're maybe right, just going on what I've heard & read.
I think you're about right on Garcia, not an elite fighter but a solid champion and he keeps getting results at the top level

Danny is in my top ten P4P, but I can understand the cherry-picker label why some people don't rate him particularly high even though his resume features several notable opponents. If you look beyond just the names and consider how good those people actually were when he fought them, as well the nature of his performances in those bouts, his accomplishments aren't as impressive in my opinion.
Guerrero: Struggled greatly with Aaron Martinez, who was easily defeated last night by Sammy Vasquez, one fight before and went limp and down even though Martinez only has 4 stoppages in 26 fights. Before that Guerrero took ample punishment in hardly winning a round against Thurman, and since facing Mayweather has looked like a washed up fighter (also note the war with mediocre Kamegai). Given this I don't think the manner of Garcia's win over Guerrero, and I had it closer than HOS did, is impressive.
Paulie: Hadn't fought in 15 months and in that fight was blown out in 4 by Shawn Porter.
Peterson: Clearly not washed up like some of the others, but Garcia did not look good in winning by MD here, and at times over the second half was getting busted up by a guy who is good but nothing special (I don't think he's better now than he was when Bradley 120-107'd him).
Herrera: A good fighter who had solid results post-Garcia despite losing to Mayfield and Alvarado a few bouts prior to facing Danny. Still, not showing from Garcia that helps his P4P standing given that many people reasonably thought Herrera won the fight, and I suspect that this bout in particular is seen by many as hurting Danny's P4P standing. Try to imagine how less highly you would regard someone like Kovalev if you thought that he lost to Hopkins and his nose had been gushing blood in the process.
Judah: Two fights before was outclassed and stopped in 5 by Khan, but still managed to give Danny hell in the second half and hurt him.
Holt: Dominated and stopped a year earlier by Kazier Mabuza
I'm not going to knock Garcia's wins over Lucas or Khan, but I can see why he is commonly called a cherry-picker and why some people are reluctant to include him with the P4P elite.

As long as we are picking through his record, I think the Khan and Matthysee wins should come under scrutiny as well.
Khan was boxing his head off until the 4th round. Had Khans defence been a litlle tighter and not been quite so careless, Danny would have been well behind going into the second half. Can't knock that KO punch of course, cracker
Matthysse was a very good win, but a lot of people, myself included had Lucas down as some sort of killer, when in reality he has come up short at every really big fight and struggled against some guys below the very top level.
He was forgiven the tight decisions against Judah and Alexander, they were marked down as abberations by some, off nights by others and bad decisions by the rest. but losses, legitimate losses to Postol and Gracia, fight that many tipped him to win, poke holes in the idea he is top drawer and life and death performances against Provo and Molina tell you he belongs with guys of that level just off propper world class.
Judah, Alexander, Garcia, Provodnikov, Molina, Postol. You have just about every style of fighter in there and he's struggled or came up short against each kind.
I like Garcia and he keeps coming up with the goods, but he is certainly one guy who, you can pick through his big wins, as you have above and find fault with each and every one.

I had it 117-111 for Garcia.
Best I've seen Guerrero box for a few years. Really hope he calls it a day. Been a great champion and handled his wife's illness with pure class.
Garcia is a difficult one to judge. 2 weight world champion with a decent resume. It's obvious though that he's still waiting for his career defining fight. Got a feeling he has a big one this year.
Add another big name to the list of Matthysse and Khan (both very good wins) then he really can claim a top 10 P4P no questions asked.
