What is the situation here, regarding mandatory obligations?
I was of the opinion that this fight had to happen soon and I thought after Cotto the WBC were going to force his arm to face GGG. Is that not why GGG got the interim title?

We now have both men facing fairly weak opposition. As delighted as I am to see Khan get the Cinco de Mayo date, there's no dressing up Amir as anything other than a soft option in comparison to GGG, as for Wade, that's a huge disappointment.

WBC allowed Canelo and GGG to have one more fight in order to further promote their fight against each other. Supposedly provided they're both successful it's next for them.

Oscar De La Hoya was recently quoted as saying when asked "Is GGG next?" ..."Oh it's going to happen" take that for what you think it's worth.

to vacate, then cotto waited a full year to make that defense. ggg then agreed to
step aside temporarily again when cotto said he wanted to fight canelo. both agreed
to pay ggg a fee and that the winner would face ggg, and in the meantime ggg took
the ibf from lemiux. cotto refused to pay the sanction fee before the canelo fight and
was stripped by the wbc, and tried to get out of paying ggg, also. canelo then threatened
to vacate rather than defend against ggg, as agreed, and ggg again stepped aside,
fee unknown for this one, as long as canelo signed another contract to fight in september.
it's really ggg's fault for continuously agreeing to temporarily step aside for people who have
no intention of defending against him. ggg could have had that wbc title long ago and be
working on the wbo as we speak.

The question is: if K2 insisted on mandatory defense at 160, would WBC strip Cotto or Canelo for refusing to fight ? I have doubts.

At this point, Canelo has to fight GGG after Khan, and Loefler/Golovkin said that weight is not a subject for discussion, so I expect Canelo to not defend against GGG at 160. Let's wait and see what WBC does.

It sounds as if Golovkin can retire of step aside payments alone!!! :P

Except Cotto didn't pay him the step aside money.

I thought he eventually did.

Cotto paid GGG the step aside. He had to, legal contract. He could always refuse to pay the sanction fee and be stripped, any champion can, but a legally agreed to step aside fee has to be paid. There is no way out.

I haven't heard confirmation of that payment from Cotto or Golovkin teams, so that is still a grey area.

either way, if he pays GGG a 2nd step aside fee in order to fight a guy for the middleweight title whose
mandatory status at welter is questionable, and then vacates to avoid GGG, he will unarguably become
the biggest bitch in boxing. just vacate the title now if he won't fight GGG. the wbc and hbo shouldn't
approve khan as an opponent for the middleweight title. this is a total joke

GGG needs to make this straight. The fight happens at 160 or not at all. No 156 no 157. 160! Or no fight. This is a bunch of BS. North American fighters are the ones perpetrating this fraudulent BS across almost every division in boxing. Straight cowards. From Wilder to Canelo to Stevenson to ward these guys don't want to fight the top European guys. Period.
