Why does heavyweight boxing hold such a cache in the sporting world?

Why is it held in such regard over other weights in the minds of the general sporting public?

Most of us could probably name the majority of the holders of the world heavyweight title over the last 120 years, but few could do the same for lower weight classes.

The skill set in the lower weight classes is generally much higher, with more exciting fights, yet the marquee known historic names tend to be from the heavyweight division, there are exceptions but most people have heard of Ali, Tyson, Louis, Frazier, Foreman, Lewis, Holmes, Dempsey, Marciano etc but they stand above most fighters from other weight classes.

What is the general public's obsession with this division, is it as simple as big is better?

There are weight class champions and then there is the king of the planet. The Heavyweight Champion of the World is considered the king.

Well pardon me for wondering what opinions people have about boxing on a boxing forum.

Growing up, I was basically taught the boxing heavyweight champ was one of the "baddest men on the planet" kind of thing.

Just my 2 cents on perhaps why without the facts.

I know when I was a kid.You knew who the Heavyweight champion was.
It was the most recognized title in the world.Everyone knew who it was and he was respected and admired on all continents.
I don't think there was a kid on the planet back then that didn't at least once dream of being the champion.

Man that title meant something years ago

I think myself that it comes down to the heavy division being like an open class, the heavy champ can beat every other divisions champ( obviously because of height, weight ect) so hes the real boxing champion of the world. theres noone else that can step into the ring and beat him

Because Mayweather, or any other minimumweight boxer, would lose badly even against the worst heavyweight champion ever.

Because men are obsessed with size, I reckon.

It's more obsessed with the best, they aren't interested in boxing woman either.

Yea, congratz beïng the best woman, congratz beïng the best below 51, or 52, or 53, or 54 kg or whatever, but we still prefere to look at the best of the best. Paralympics are watched a lot less as well.

Fascinating question.

Very simple answer though.

1) Most sports, obviously don't have weight divisions. American football doesn't. Rugby doesn't. If you are an 100 LBS male tennis player and can beat everyone in tennis under 100 LBS, no one cares. Most sports cater to the BEST regardless of weight.

2) History. Even though Marcel Cerdan, Robinson, both Leonards (The black and the Jewish one) were great fighters, the rich history was Jack Johnson vs the white hopes. Schmeling vs Joe Louis in the battle for the world. Muhammad Ali vs the US. All Heavyweights.
