Roman Gonzalez vs McWilliams Arroyo

Looks like Chocolatito's got McWilliams Arroyo next.

Not a great fight, but Arroyo is a former world amateur champ and Olympian with good power, he dropped Ruenroeng and lost a very close SD to him two fights ago, and he is better than I see people giving him credit for (the ones saying 'WHO?' obviously don't follow the division).

He's a decent opponent, but I'd have preferred Ruenroeng or Ioka.

If Gonzalez isn't staying in the division for much longer then he should fight all the best opponents straight away.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what's gonna happen, too. He wants to move up in weight for a 4th belt, but instead he'll say "Ya know what, I've still got at least 3 more fights some fans want to see at this weight class, so I'll take about two years to clean house and then move up those 3 pounds for that 4th belt when I'm closing in on 30 years old."

This info isn't even correct. He's set to take on Juan Hernandez on April 23rd. I'd have preferred Arroyo, honestly.

Weight jumping is boring. He should clear out this division first.

If he can't be bothered to try to unify at flyweight then he probably won't bother at super flyweight either.

Apart from Inoue: What other opponents are there for him at super flyweight that are better than the opponents that he can fight at flyweight?

Are you sure it's incorrect? Hernandez was mentioned a couple days ago, but within the last few hours Arroyo has been mentioned as the opponent, and Rafael tweeted that it's on.

Cuadras is a good fight for him there, too.

You can say he should do this or that, but that's just not the way this sport works anymore. It's barely even his call, or any fighter's, for that matter. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

Looks like you're right and I'm wrong. That was a quick substitution.

It's a discussion forum.

I don't expect them to care what I think, but I'll say it anyway.

I think flyweight has better fights for him overall, especially if a few of the best light flyweights move up.

A bout with Srisaket at 115 would be interesting...after Srisaket reclaims the WBC belt from Cuadras...

Lame fight. The supposed #1 P4P fighter should not be fighting borderline top 10 guys in a thin weight class. Maybe not as bad as Mayweather/Berto but pretty close.

I like this kid an all, he's a tough little fighter. But i've never agreed or understood the "flavor of the month" meteoric rise this kid had to the TOP of P4P lists. It's ridiculous. I know it's an imaginary division in boxing that fans can banter back and forth about, but the number one P4P boxer means something, always has. List out the last 10 top P4P boxers and then try explain how RG fits in with that group.

Now he's fighting on yet another undercard against another lousy opponent. What kind of P4P king can't even land a main event and can only fight on GGG's undercards? You say that hasn't nothing to do with P4P rankings and i'll say you're wrong. All of the top P4P kings could put asses in the seats. They were able to cause a stir in the world of sports and break into mainstream pop culture somehow. RG could lose his next fight in shocking fashion and it wouldn't even make the local paper now. You may care but you're in the minority.

If anyone thinks that Roman Gonazales is going to be the face of Boxing in the wake of Floyd's retirement, their nuts.

"The face of Boxing" and P4P #1 are not necessarily equivalent. Those who choose Chocalitito #1 probably realize that he is not the most popular fighter.

Putting asses in the seats is not what flyweights do.

On Friday a bout was viewed by around 200,000,000 and yet didn't feature a top 100 p4p fighter....popularity and fame have little to do with who is the best...

On paper doesn't look that bad however if it isn't a unification or move up in weight for a world title next can't be bothered with the hype anymore.

I agree that fame and popularity have nothing to do with becoming P4P champ but the past champs have all managed to have it. I can't ever remember one P4P king who had trouble getting off undercards. RG is a novelty act and the sexy pick for some people that allows the to prove they watch the fighters lighter than most women. GGG and Kovalev are the two best P4P fighters in the world right now and the future.

I don't think he's fought a single suitable opponent since he won the title from Yaegashi. I know Soto and Viloria are still ranked in the top 10 at flyweight but they're both well past their primes, practically ancient by flyweight standards. And now he's fighting Arroyo who is a fringe contender at best. These are not opponents befitting a P4P type of fighter.

True, but that is a problem for several fighters that are high on most P4P lists.

should it really be a problem for rg's team to get the best names in these divisions to fight him? as i cant imagine the purses are that high in the flyweight divisions and so on :bag:

Yea that's why I assumed it'd be easier. Do Estrada, Ruenrong, and Ioka really make that much money per fight where Teiken or whoever is promoting Gonzo these days can't get them even with HBO's backing?

This is a solid fight. As for viloria and Sosa, I'm sure HBO had a say in that. They're more recognizable names.

These guys make good money at home. Coming up with more to make them travel the globe with a high chance of losing is tricky business.

understand that, but this fight is the chief support on ggg undercard on us tv (i dont know if its ppv or not) which for most flyweights is a huge opportunity in exposure and presumably more money than there gonna get in any other fight apart from one or two of the japanese shows i would of thought anyway :bag:
