Robert De Niro Boxing Movie ‘Hands of Stone’ Set for August Release

The Weinstein Company has set an Aug. 26 opening date for the U.S. release of “Hands of Stone,” starring Edgar Ramirez as boxer Roberto Duran and Robert De Niro as trainer Ray Arcel.

The movie follows the life story of Duran, who rose from the slums of Panama to become one of the great fighters of his time. His rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard (portrayed by Usher in the film) is considered one of the fiercest in boxing history.

Ellen Barkin, John Turturro and Ana de Armas also star.

I think thats EXACTLY the reaction they want for people to look at when they see Leonard in this film. I think theyre trying to make Leonard the bad guy.

It isn't any kind of secret. All the promotional stuff names Usher as playing Sugar Ray.

If they take that tack the movie will be a turkey.

They have "CGI" now. Special effects. Usher will have hands faster than Roy Jones Jr. Some will think Usher is bad a** for real. Probably get a lot of respect after this movie..

Great casting!

Can't wait to see DeNiro as Arcel.

I was more excited about this movie when Gael Garcia Bernal was initially cast as Duran and Al Pacino as Arcel.

I can't believe anybody would think this would work with Leonard as the bad guy, but I seem to remember Max Baer being played as an out and out psycho in Cinderella Man, so I'm not hoping for anything great here.

I can imagine the making with an interview with Usher sweating in his singlet and a towel around his neck saying stuff like 'its a been awhile...I use to box...I trained hard for this movie'.. but in the end they'll just have to use CGI.

I always found it funny after Raging Bull when it was suggested by thespians that De Niro coulda been a contender

I hope they don't start it with Usher. I'm sure the same crap was said of Will Smith in the press.

When was the last time he brought out a good film? Ever since Goodfellas his filmography reads like a steaming pile of crap. He's a pishy comedy actor now, I suspect 'Hands of Stone' to be a spoof tbh.

He's not done many good films lately, but then he has made over a 100 films.

He's actually a very good comedy actor too, the Fokker films are very funny.

You'll find some gems in there since 1990 but there are plenty of low-quality movies as well, especially lately.
But you are righting off Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, even Cop Land as crap

Making so many films is his problem, how did he focus on this Duran and dedicate to his character when he was probably also shooting "Dirty Grandpa" "the intern" and "Joy" presumably all at the same time.

Glad you enjoyed "Little Fockers" though.

Little fockers is still ok, not as good as the first two admittedly. I watched the intern on a recent flight to brasil, not a masterpiece that's for sure.

It is odd that he's making so many films of this type, I mean, he can't be skint, and he's getting on, you'd think he'd want to do some films that enhance his legacy rather than just forgettable fodder.

Trying to make SRL the bad guy could turn out to be an epic fail.

Doesn't sound like hardcore boxing fans are the target audience though.
Seemed like a lot of boxing fans were too stupid to recognize that about the Creed movie.
We were not the target audience, Creed is much better once you acknowledge that.
Probably going to work that way for this movie too.
