Nigel Benn vs. Gennady Golovkin (GGG)

How do you see this one going? Benn was a better puncher at middleweight and GGG not the hardest guy to hit.

Golovkin KO8

Benn is not in his class really. It might even be a jab that finishes him off in this one. Golovkin looks easy to hit when he doesn't care for the opponents power. Hed out box Benn and when he became ragged and desperate, apply the coup de grace.

What's in Golovkin's record that suggests it would go that way? We know what Benn did under pressure, and whilst he wasn't unbeatable, he was a really hard man. Nobody knows what Golovkin would do.

i like benn but when did benn win a hard fight ? the only reason he beat G man was because his head was about to explode .golovkin would win in around about 9 rds

He is possibly the greatest amateur fighter of all time, unbeaten, very highly skilled with fight ending power. Nigel was knocked out by both Chris Eubank and Mike Watson and troubled by much lesser fighters than Golovkin. I just see no way Benn is conscious by the finish.

What do you see in Nigel's career that suggests otherwise? G-Man?

GGG is arguably the best p4p puncher in the world right now.

GGG KO 8 and well ahead on the cards at the time of the stoppage

The Anthony Logan fight, Benn down in first then struggled until he landed the devastating KO punch?

true but logan was no golovkin ,if you look at benns hard fights watson, eubanks 1 and collins he lost them , i like benn i just think he's completely wrong style to beat GGG

I don't talk Dream Fights until a fighter is either retired or faded to the point that I know for sure I've seen the best of him. This is not the case with Golovkin.

Very uncool.there was nothing wrong with gmans, head the first three rounds when he put an inhuman beating on benn and benn fought back.

Iran Barkley? Remember him? Power punching and tough fight all night brawler?

I just think there is no one around with benns combination of speed ,ferocity, power and bob and weave defence to challenge golovkin.i also think golovkin is another overrated hype in the manner of a jeff lacey but there isnt a calzaghe, jones or benn around to expose him today

Hype job? I can't get my head round that one. Benn bobbed and weaved erratically. He won his fights on raw aggression and power. Absolutely made for GGG.

Lacy had very tough fights with unimpressive opponents Omar Shieka, Rubin Williams and Syd Vanderpool.
GGG has had no trouble at all against a similar level of competition, he has already shown himself to be better than the Jeff Lacy's out there.
Could it be that GGG himself IS the Calzaghe or Jones that goes around squashing the Jeff Lacy hype jobs of the world?

To anybody who was actually paying attention Lacy had been exposed before he ever got near Calzaghe.
One tough fight against the kind of competition he was facing is an anomaly, repeated tough nights is an established trend and clear indicator of your ceiling.

very uncool? benn was allowed to fight back because gerralds brain was swelling up you could see in Gmans eyes something was wrong well before the end ,as for barkley he was a big tough guy but he'd lost his last 2 fights before benn and was a slow starter not an easy fight for benn but nothing like facing golovkin . there was 2 versions of benn the wild swinging middleweight who was exciting but also vulnerable as the fight went on like the watson and eubanks fights there was a good chance he would punch himself out this guy had a maybe 5% chance of landing early like he did vs barkley ,then there's the slightly wiser benn at supermiddle who boxed more and was less wasteful he would of lasted longer but still wouldn't of made the final bell

Honestly, you seem an OK guy but you know absolute fornicate all about boxing. I've seen you comment many times on boxers you haven't even seen.

Nigel at his best at middleweight, came forward relentlessly bobbing and weaving, sometimes directly onto punches. He was a hard hitter but basically a paper champ. Golovkin is the real deal, both in his lengthy, hugely successful amateur career and as an unbeaten pro. I really like Benn and have met the guy twice, he stopped bouncers stamping on my head once. So if I was playing favourites Nigel's right up there.

Thanks for the compliment there :TU:

Correct I do not know 'much' about Golovkin, aside from a select few fights and feature pieces. Television is an issue for me. I'll have no doubt read about his amateur pedigree in the same piece I learned that he has two brothers who are both sadly deceased. It was that part that stayed with me, more than his amateur numbers tbh.

On Benn, I happen to just be of the opinion nobody had an "easy" night against him - with the probable exception of my favourite boxer, Michael Watson - this was as much to do with Watson's brilliant boxing that night as it did with any shortcomings of Benn (The Collins stuff I do not remember well enough. One busted ankle and probably well past best in the other one too). Eubank did a punch perfect beautiful job, but had he put a foot wrong I suspect Benn would have KO'd (....TKO'd more likely) him.

You make Benn sound like garbage , I think he was more dangerous than that, with respect :TU:

He's not garbage, that's a ridiculous thing to infer from my posts. Same as making out I said it would be easy for Golovkin. I just don't see him beating Gennady or lasting the distance. It's a professional fight between world level athletes. It's never easy no matter how it looks.

Good post. Many people seem to ignore or be ignorant of Lacy struggling several times with mediocre opposition prior to Calzaghe. GGG hasn't had the same issue and in my opinion is leagues better than Lacy ever was.

I think Benn was lucky the Barkley fight didn't go beyond the first. Agree with all you've said entirely.

Benn was a massively exciting, risk-taking middleweight but was actually a far more effective super-middle in my opinion.
He did his growing-up at super middleweight and was a far better, if conservative, fighter.

I think at middleweight he'd properly rattle Golovkin's cage big time - a couple of knockdowns are not out of the question - but ultimately Nigel's wildness and problems with pacing himself, openness to a stiff job as well as Golvokin's own brutal hitting power would result in a 9 round TKO for the Eastern European.

Great fight at middle; but even better at super-middle when Benn is more polished and savvy.

Well i appreciate your post perseus but if indeed u did suspect lacey of being a hype job prior to calzaghe ,than u were in the vast vast minority. He was presented by the american boxing media,as a mini tyson coming over to meet calzaghe.

I accept lacey is a rough analogy....the point being a former amateur star, undefeated and a big puncher.clearly golovkin is also a excellent boxer...im just saying i reserve judgement until he meets a andre ward or canelo or more far fetched a mayweather or kovolev ...i accept ggg would take any 1 of those fights and its not his, fault others wont fight him or the relatively weak mw ranks right now.
