from what I remember reading ,Robert Mitchum fought as an amateur out of a CCC Camp near Chino California in 1936,he then turned semi-pro
(his highest purse being 25 dollars)and fought in Central California and Nevada.

Interesting thread. I remember the film vaguely. Palance as usual, the baddy. Don't think he ever played anything else. Obviously Robert the winner in the film. From what Ive heard/read Mitchum was a hard man in real life. Didn't know he'd boxed though Im not surprised. I don't think it was uncommon in actors of that era. But apparently Palance boxed pro and got a draw with Joe Baksi, who terrorised British heavyweights. So Im going with him with/without gloves. Just as though I saw Victor Mclaglen come 2nd to John Wayne in a couple of films,I think he'd have murdered John for real.

Sorry to Cutman Scabbers. Just looked at boxrec you posted. Not a draw, but a points loss. But still went the distance. Ive thought for years thatit was a draw.

Robert Mitchum had a pretty good "sloping right hand"
but it looked to me like Jack Palance threw the more vicious punches.

Right after World War II ended, both of my parents attended and went on to graduate from Stanford University, where they met. Jack Palance also attended Stanford at the time. I was told that Palance was "slinging hash" in a student dining room to earn some money.

No worries! Would be nice to see some video of that bout.

That sounds like it may have been before Stanford University banned any and all courses on the history and
contributions of Western Civilization, because they didnt want some students who attented to feel bad about themselves ?

But you know how Bernie Reynolds was knocked out by a Mitchum punch ?
Some of Bernie's buddies were holding Mitchums arms back in a bar and Mitchum's arm strained and then slipped out of the grip
and the constrained force actually may have did it.
