Stuart Hall Darlington Legend

Although this man has made history it seems he always has to swim upstream to please the press and boxing pundits. Any ideas on why the press, pundits and other's put him down or just plain ignore him and is this fair.

After the Malinga fight I read plenty of positive coverage regarding Stuart Hall.

He gets about his fair share, I'd say. McDonnell and Haskins don't get aj style coverage either.

He's underrated. His only losses have come against world (Or fringe world level in Butler's case) fighters... and the Butler fight I actually had Hall winning.

McDonnell's lack of media coverage baffles me more though. He's got some very good wins over Kameda, Ceja and Hall but nobody knows who he is.

McDonnell couldn't care less, either.

I don't know mate- he probably gets the level of recognition he deserves.

Does he put himself about a bit locally ? - you know, visiting schools and hospitals etc. getting his face in the paper ? - does he have an agent/PR setting things up, trying to get on local tv or whatever ?

To be honest, I don't think his achievements are at the level that national tv are going to knock on his door - it takes a lot of effort to get out there.

Also, (this is one of my pet hates with Brtish boxing) all but one of his title fights - for Commonwealth, European and World - have been against British opponents, which doesn't suggest that he is "proper" world level (without taking anything away from his achievements).

Didn't McDonnell drop a boll*ck and lose his hard earned title over some administrative neglect but then promptly go out and win an eliminator....or maybe even another WT (Kameda?)?.......this underlines his quality and also the fact I don't know if he is a current WC underscores the point made about his profile.

I'm no expert but McDonnell is a man that gets the job done, consistently - and he is the leading Brit around that weight, by a good margin imo.

I love Stuey and he is a friend, I think it hasn't always helped with who has promoted him in the past.

he's in (for him I believe) the best place possible now working with Eddie and will get more coverage that way hopefully.

Despite everything he genuinely will fight anyone and he's not done yet with a big fight coming up, which by the way has 'war' written all over it. If he performs well in that...who knows what next!!

I think Hall's dimensions (height, reach) are massive for him. More than skills. If he was a heavier weight with more active boxers then I don't think he'd be close to world level.
This said, it takes a certain ambition and fire to do what he's done and on the attitude front he must be near the top of the class.
He's pretty much said himself that he turned round at 25 or 26 and realised he was going to be nothing, or TRY to be something - and he went for option two with everything he had :TU:

McDonnell went on holiday straight after winning his title, leaving no chance of publicity. He had to be told who Sugar Ray Leonard was at a dinner! He has no idea who anyone is and will fight whoever pays most, wherever they want!

Bizarre....he can't be much of a one for watching the old tapes. Nowt wrong with it. Some kids just prefer doing it themselves instead of watching it done by others......surely he knows a few...like Calzaghe. Tell me someone that doesn't think they might improve by watching him.

Nobody is claiming anything else, but what do you want for him? A Stuey Hall day? SPOTY? You've got to be realistic.

Ryan Rhodes won the Lonsdale outright in 90 days. Did Hall break that record?

That's nice mate and very true, I admire him a lot for how he turned everything around

Whatever happens now, he can always say he was a world champ, and has some lovely belts on his wall at home and that ain't something that comes lightly regardless of how he got them.

if ever you meet the man you will know what he is like, as down to earth as they come, willing to fight anyone and I do mean anyone.

if you watch his pro fights you will see he has also never been hurt, lost yes, but not hurt, hard as nails the bloke :)

I do agree with Mickey though, yes I think his achievements go under the radar but I also think there is only so far you can go

Anyways, top lad and i'll be there in Leeds cheering him on.....

When did he win the European? I thought he lost to McDonnell and to Haskins for it.

But on the OP's point, Hall is clearly a very good fighter. However, at the lighter weights, very few fighters from any country apart from Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Mexico have ever got decent publicity, and the lighter you are, the more it seems that is the case. So I don't see why it's a surprise, to be honest.

Just because a fighter wins a world title doesn't mean they're a world class fighter. Domestic level is a bit harsh but I'd have a hard time describing as anything better than European level.

Hall isn't anything spectacular but he's affective at what he does. Does the basics well and is fit, tough and rugged. He isn't elite world level but clearly way above domestic level. Bit like Ricky Burns. Good roll model for young ones coming through. Proof that hard work and discipline can take you to the top.

Stuart Hall won and defended the British title but he was never the best bantamweight in the country whilst champion, Haskins and McDonnell proved that.
He won a vacant version of a world title which had been stripped from a boxer who had previously beaten him and he was never ever considered the best in the world or even his own country.
My perception of a british world class fighter would be a Pat Cowdell or Kevin Finnegan, guys that were solid European champions and fought the likes of Marvin Hagler and Salvador Sanchez and put up great fights.
Sorry if I upset anyone but just don't see Stuey Hall as a boxing legend.

Also not quite sure how a fact based opinion makes me immature or a troll and if you are on a forum you should debate and discuss not start name calling because someone does not agree with you.
