He's just looking for an excuse to run away from Kovalev. I can guarantee Ward is going to duck him.

I don't think Ward will duck Kovalev, its not his style. I see it as a winnable fight for him, but will no doubt be very tough. Even being rusty Ward is able to avoid most punches and neutralize an aggressive opponent. Easier said than done vs Kovalev, I know.

Him moving to heavy? Maybe he wants to do what RJJ did, only do the right thing and retire after. Many, many beatable heavies out there. Quite a few old and over-weight cruiser weights.

He ducked Bute so it definitely is his style. He's not as big a ducker as Quillin or Stevenson, but I still expect Ward to pull out before November. Moving up a division gives him that excuse.

He's probably hoping Bellew wins the vacant title in a couple of months because that's a ready made, piss easy title victory for him and an easy way out from facing Krusher.

It's not like it hasn't been done before - many times in the past and most recently by RJJ and Toney. Of course, RJJ only stayed at heavyweight for one fight against one of the weakest beltholders in the division's history, but Toney had a pretty successful heavyweight career for a while.

Jones was successful due to his incredible speed and relexes, which allowed him to easily outbox Ruiz, who barely landed on him all fight. He also had enough power to earn Ruiz's respect, if not to hurt him badly.

While Toney lacked Jones's speed, he was a very technically sound boxer with an excellent defensive construct and an iron chin. I remember reading someone saying during Toney's heavyweight prime that he possessed the speed of a light heavyweight, the power of a cruiserweight and the chin of a heavyweight, which I think was about right. He was fat and small for the division, but his advanced skill level let him get away with that.

Looking at Andre Ward, he is slightly taller than both Jones and Toney with a slightly shorter reach. He was 186lb on fight night for his most recent fight and could probably put on 15lb of muscle without sacrificing too much speed. Technically I think he's a match for Toney and better than RJJ. He's also a better athlete than Toney, while not being as quick or explosive as RJJ. What possibly hurts him at this weight is that he doesn't hit as hard as Toney or RJJ and he certainly doesn't have Toney's chin. Overall, I could envisage Ward having some success at heavyweight - he could possibly beat the likes of Glazkov, Scott, Chisora and Hammer, but I wouldn't like his chances against the giant heavyweights.

Interestingly, I slightly favour Kovalev to beat Ward, but I think Ward would have a greater chance of success at heavyweight, as his game doesn't revolve around his power.

Too early to tell if Ward is great, but he is excellent.

Let's see how he does against Kovalev, light heavies, and cruisers before he starts talking Heavyweights. :stop:

Ward has stated on numerous occasions in the past.
That he wants the heavyweight title. It has been a goal of his before the super 6.
This is not new

Yep. Truth. He will face off vs. Canelo Alvarez for the vacant USBA Heavyweight title sometime next year.

But not the real HW title he would just be hoping that like Roy Jones that a bum would somehow get a hold of it and he would challenge them for the title. You know he want nothing to do with Fury or Potvetkin after he takes Wilder's trinket.

You notice Roy Jones did not chase Lewis. Lewis would have killed him. He went after Ruiz's trinket.

The elite at the division are. They would kill him. He is hoping to cherry pick a title vs a bum like Jones did. Typical American BS. Never ends.

Ah, no wonder the Americans don't like the heavyweights any more.

...I'm not aware of any qualities that might make him successful top HW: his chin, reach, power?...and he'll probably have to leave his backyard to fight the best...perish the thought :witzend:

Why would he need to do that? You think he's scared of him or something??

Where do all this simple talk like this come from? The man has had one fight since his return, he is a little rusty and his timing is off but he still beat up a bigger man and made it look relatively easy, he proved he has a great chin too as he took a couple of flush shots that didn't even bother him and he dropped him with a good left hook.

I see the fight with him and Kova being pretty tough for both of them but I know he will find a way not to take so many flush shots.
