This is keeping me awake! Don't ask me why but I'm trying to remember the name of a boxer from a few years ago now he was Cuban I think went about 36-0-1 or something and came in horrifically overweight for an important match. Don't know why it's important for my brain to have this info, but it would help.

Definitely Joan Guzman, a New York Dominican.

He went from Superfeather up to Light Welter in about 4 fights!!!

Just looking at his record and his first world title win was on a Joe Calzaghe undercard in Wales with plenty of future alphabet champions on the card

Remember Guzman was down to face Scott Harrison but it didn't happen. Can't mind which man but it was down to, let just say, poor discipline.
Watched Guzman fight for a title a year or so later and thought he would likely have murdered Harrison. A very good and dangerous fighter, who's career was pissed away through lack of discipline.
Of course the same could be levelled at Scott harrison

Joan Guzman, is probably who you're thinking of, he's not Cuban though.

I thought Guzman too. He was due to face Harrsion and Alex Arthur and neither happened. I'm sure he was WBO champ at SuperFeather when Arthur beat Gogoladze for the interim title then vacated. Arthur was elevated to full champion then ballsed it up against Nicky Cook. One of the strangest and shortest 'world title' reigns!

Can anyone help me, please? The situation with Broner got me thinking and I'm sure there was an instance where a boxer in a televised bout was arrested as soon as he got out of the ring. I think it was in the USA in the 80's or 90's - I can't remember his name.

There was a guy who walloped his opponent after he lost the fight a good while ago and got arrested. Was in New York I think. Don't think it was as fas back as the 80s. Maybe late 90s/2000ish

Thanks, it wasn't Butler I was thinking of. I think the boxer was wanted for armed robbery and was recognised on TV, HDD skipped town and was fighting under another name. The cops found out the next time he was to box and got him either going into the ring or directly afterwards.

Butler was a bad man, one of the posters in Boxing history used to house share with him or was a neighbour.

Roberto Medina (AKA John Garcia), lost to Meldrick Taylor and was arrested after the fight as he had been on the run from the police following a prison break. I'm sure I read that an law enforcement agent recognised him and called it in.

EDIT: They knew he was going to be there.

If it is, He walked through the guy, I think there were points in the fight where he was giving the guy a free shot then rattling him with two of his own. He looked impressive and I can remember thinking he'd annihilate Harrison

No I'm talking pish. The Harrison fight was supposed to be 2006, it must have been Jorge Rodrigo Barrios.
But Boxrec has it as a close split decision.

I must investigate further, I was sure I watched him beat the crap out of an Argie.

Yeah, it also had Jeff Lacy further down the bill.

I met Guzman a couple of times. He seemed nice enough, but was surrounded by some right berks who just let him deviate from the dietary plans set down for him. He has a thing for fizzy drinks so they were sneaking them to him if he demanded them. It's a shame as he was talented.
