Everyone questions the ref in Eubank Blackwell, BUT...

In every thread about Eubank Blackwell I see posts questioning why the ref didnt stop the fight sooner. However, I dont see as many questioning the ringside doctor, or indeed Blackwells trainer. Locket hasnt been afraid of throwing in the towel previously - Rees Broner and Maccarinelli Brahmer for example.
So, in a fight where a fighter hasnt suffered multiple knockdowns, and is trying to fight back albeit losing handily. Who should have "first charge" on pulling him out?

Any of the above can pull him out.
But I don't think it needs to be a finger pointing exercise.
He was hurt and he was losing. But there was still some fight in him, he was still defending himself (all though not very effectively, but he hadn't been doing that since the opening round)
Had there been no brain bleed and the ref/doctor/corner pulled the lad 2 rounds earlier we would all be on here complaining that it was a disgraceful early stoppage.
What has happened was unfortunate and I feel for the lad but can we leave the witch hunt to channel 4 interviewers please

My thoughts exactly. Everyone's an expert with the benefit of hindsight

A doctor cannot stop a fight. The referee can call over the doctor to examine the fighter and give him advice. The ref follows the advice more often than not. The doctor cannot stop the fight (or advise the ref) if he has not been called over by the ref.

Perhaps that's what the rules state.
But if you were a medical professional, looking at a man in genuine need of medical treatment and you had someone who's only qualification was refereeing a boxing contest, telling you he was going to continue to allow that man to take punches in the head, are you telling me you wouldn't take action.
I mean a doctor climbs through the rope and says this isn't happening, whatcha gonna do?

Very poor thread.
With a Mod posting on it as well - should be locked.

I've always been of the opinion that a doctor should be able to stop a fight even without being referred to by the ref. I mentioned this to colleagues when I worked for the BBBofC. The rules need changing asap.

Stoppages as this are common enough without the retired fighter suffering a brain injury. Just very unlucky.

There’s a funny clip of Danny Williams I think it is...the doctor came to inspect and called the fight off. Williams said no and pushed him out the way and then the bell went almost immediately so he ran out to the middle and left the doc standing there. Then he won and it all gets forgotten that the doctor had stopped it ! Weird.
According to the above tho it sounds like the message had to go via the ref but that sounds like a formality.

I'm getting a bit concerned about the lack of updates regarding Nicks condition, Monday there was talk of him being brought out of the coma on Tuesday, since then nothing.
I hope everything is okay.

Yep. Similarly one-sided bouts occur fairly often and far more often than not the beaten fighter doesn't incur this type of injury.
Watching the bout I never thought to myself that the punishment Blackwell was taking would probably lead to something like this, and I don't think the ref, corner, or doctor should be harshly criticized for not stepping in earlier (though OP's question still stands).

As someone said earlier, all of those mentioned in the poll can stop a fight and there's no particular pecking order.
The biggest problem for Nick in this fight was his own courage and resolve. He not only continued to defend himself, he also continued to attack Eubank. This meant the referee was within his rights to let the bout continue until it did.
Had Nick been cut worse than he was the doctor would have been obliged to stop the fight, but he wasn't.
That Nick remained fairly sharp and seemingly coherent was also a factor in all those with the power to stop the fight not doing so until it was finally stopped in the 10th.

How so, genuine question, interested in opinions of others.

I don't question the ref at all. A lot of people have stated the ref did nothing wrong.

End of round six Nicks corner had to get his attention as he wasn't even looking at the corner man and you can see he isn't taking onboard what they are saying

Personally I think it was the responsibility of the trainer to pull his fighter. Blackwell didn't look like the punches were troubling him, although his face was getting bloodied up. The ref sees him throwing punches back at Eubank, so he is staying active enough to remain in the fight, and still has a chance of winning of he can throw a great counter to rock Eubank Jr. The corner spend a minute looking at their fighter in the corner, and get an unrivaled chance to look at them dead in the eye.

Imo their should be finger pointing. Pointed firmly at the BBBoC.
I've watched about 2 boxing cards so far in 2016 because i'm sick to the back teeth of mismatches.
What was Blackwell pre-fight? 14/1 or something?
J'Leon Love from Floyd's gym (drug cheat i think) is fighting tonight. If you bet £100 on him you will win £1 profit for a return of £101.00.
If you bet £100 on Broner to beat Theopane you'll get £6 profit.
If you bet £100 on Callum Smith you'd win £3.
Roman, Golovkin, Saunders all fighting end of the month, all facing massive overmatched underdogs.
Nobody wants to watch these predictable fights. The only question is how badly hurt the underdog is going to get. In the case of Blackwell i guess that remains to be seen but boxing can't continue this trend of constantly serving up gross mismatches.

I have been very critical of Lockett. He should have realised what was happening to his fighter much sooner. He was getting badly beaten up and to send him out for the 10th round with his eye like that was pretty negligent in my view.

Could Robert Smith have stopped stopped the fight?
I remember seeing Larry Hazzard who was the New Jersey Commissioner instruct a ref to stop a fight, in fact I'm sure I saw him jump in the ring on one occasion?

I'm pretty sure that the rules state that only the referee can stop a fight. As stated earlier, I think this rule needs to change and ringside doctors should be able to stop a fight without being called over by a ref.

Are you saying Blackwell should have been stripped of the title, and it just awarded to Eubank?

I don't think anyone would have said it was a disgraceful stoppage if the ref had jumped in somewhere in round 8 or 9 - some may have thought it a little bit premature perhaps, but Blackwell was a mile behind, was bashed up, and wasn't looking like making any inroads into the fight at all.

Was that the fight where he dislocated his shoulder?
