Journalistic Idiocy on the AJ fight...

Ok, I know people will slag this because it's the Daily Mail, but this is just laughable.

At least the Daily Mail has a dedicated boxing 'journalist' who writes several articles a week... But this was actually in the printed paper and shows you how little boxing 'journalists' writing for the big papers know or are in touch with boxing! (EG Sri Sen used to write for the Times and said Hamed was the first fighter of Pakistani origin to win a world title.)

Anyway, according to Jeff: "
It will shine all the brighter on Saturday night when he takes with him to the O2 the coaches at the Fitzroy Lodge amateur boxing club in south London, led by current gym boss Mick Carney, who groomed him to win the Olympics and thereby set him up for professional glory.

‘I gave them my word they would be there with me when I win a world title,’ he says."....

Right... This is the club he never boxed for, to my knowledge never trained at... And it is apparently run by Mick Carney 'current gym boss"...

I was very close to Mick and miss him so much, but he died in 2011.... I would love him to be resurrected but I have heard no evidence of this.

What lazy, poor journalism.... I assume this idiot meant Finchley ABC

Sadly it seems as if most of the newspapers can only afford to do just about the bare minimum to cover the big fights and they''re just keeping on old warhorses like Powell or using young hacks who are probably writing about three or four other sports as well and are therefore not that great.

Even The Times can't afford to put Ron Lewis (who is good) full-time on the boxing beat and he does MMA, athletics and even the Americas Cup  Powell must be topping up his pension doing this and I am afraid it kind of shows in the product.

I find most papers and generic news shows coverage of boxing patronising. Couple of times I've read bits and pieces on the mail website and scrolled down to the comments at the bottom and it boils ma piss :witzend:

I agree... But this bellend is a dedicated boxing journalist, and his fvck ups are easily research able or even just a phone call away.

I agree with you about the pension, as clearly there is an issue with senility

Sadly, Powell is very, very unlikely to be sitting at the DM each morning carefully crafting/researching a story and able to write purely about boxing. Those days are long gone.

The chances are is that Jeff is semi-retired and a freelancer working from home, called up 'ad hoc' whenever the Mail needs a fight story, and some pillock of a sub-editor has hacked about the story and added the utterly stupid/inaccurate bits at the end to sex it-up.

Powell is probably furious because the headline, key quotes and photo captions are not his work.

That's the way newspaper journalism works these days; top specialist writers no longer on the pay roll and just scratching around for whatever work they can get. I know motoring journalists - who know the business inside out - making a pittance from doing the odd car review.

Jeff Powell was so upset at being snubbed by David Haye, he posted an article with tons of pictures of him with other boxers to make it look like everybody loved him.

Thanks and good point. But his errors do not big up or improve the story.... They're just totally incompetent... Is there any evidence Jeff is a severe alcoholic?

Wow!! I must have missed that! What a narcissistic idiot! And a supposedly respected journalist resorted to this kind of petty nonsense!?

It's almost a parody it's so silly

Anyone who believes PAC beat Floyd is an absolute clown and should be banned from sports journalism for eternity.

What an absolute pile of toss this bloke writes. It's embarrassing, and really annoying. I saw him at the York Hall AJ run out, with his "I'm a boxing expert" grin plastered all over his dopey boat.

Untrammelled greed and corruption has turned boxing into a circus and, in the process, removed it from serious public interest. It's gets the coverage it deserves.

Yes but I'm still astounded as to how a supposed boxing specialist could write such totally erroneous sh1te.... I'm not naive and realise papers run unsubstantiated stories as well as out right rumours / lies.... But even to a cynical bastard... This level of incompetence is astonishing..

After reading this article I decided to review Joshua's career in slow motion, and I now believe he did box for Fitzroy Lodge and is still being trained by Mick Carney.

Jeff Powell has always been a tool, his writing loaded and spiteful. I'm actually grateful to him for making me realise what toss the Daily Mail was/is, probably 20 odds years ago when I lived at home and my Mum got it delivered. Still does bless her, "because they are nice about animals"

I love reading the comments though. They're terrible.

Edit: I liked this one
Mark my words, you heard it from me, one of them will win or it will be a draw. I am never wrong.
This one too
I regularly give daily mail articles to the kids to spot spelling and grammar mistakes, thanks for the homework Dm!
