I would please like to know how good was former welterweight and light middleweight champion Simon Brown? I watched the fight on You Tube and he was one tough fighter.

He was a tough guy and a bit of a power house at WW. Had a big upset win over Terry Norris in their first fight after he was widely outpointed by Buddy McGirt.

Oh, you watched "the fight"? That's good, everyone should watch the fight at some point. It's a good one.

Anyways, he was the cliche case of a good boxer-puncher turned primarily puncher as his career progressed and he saw what his power did to people. Early on he was actually somewhat of a McCallum type, picking his spots, opening up the defense, zoning in, and attacking. By the 90s he'd become more of loading up bomber, looking for the big shots more and more often rather than letting them come.

Still had some success, but I think he probably underachieved a bit. Gotta love his KO of Norris, though.

Was a Great fighter one guy that was dangerous and avoided.

excellent fighter who was tough to sell - caribbean fighters are always hard sells as they don't have highly marketable personalities - limited markets for Jamaicans and Haitians and boxers of the Caribbean - mccallum was a great fighter but was not a big seller on his own -

I loved Simon Brown. He was pretty popular in London when he was active. I remember watching many of his fights although it was usually on the Saturday afternoon the week after his bout.

There was no shame in him losing to Buddy McGirt - who was an excellent fighter himself.

Brown had the heart of a true warrior - even in defeat. Check out his loss to Vincent Pettway. I've never seen anything like it.

I watched Simon Brown's first fight with Terry Norris and Norris made a mistake of trying to trade punches with a puncher like Brown who upset him with a 4th round KO to take the light middleweight title which nobody expected him to win. Norris learned his mistakes and out-boxed Brown to regain his light middleweight title.

His 14th round win over Tyrone Trice in their first fight answers this one in my view - amazing performance. Would have loved to see him fight British welters such as Honeyghan, Laing and Mittee in the very late 80s / very early 90s. Made most of his title defences on the road, never afraid to travel, and fought decent opponents in that run. The win over Maurice Blocker looks particularly good in retrospect. Would have liked to see him retire after the Pettway fight, though - he was never really a middleweight.

think i read an article years ago about trice and how he suffered terribly with pre fight nerves to the point it was affecting his in the ring performances, although cant remember if he ever got over them or not

Remember how Brown pulled out of his scheduled first fight with Terry Norris, just hours before the bout was to take place.

I think he complained of chest pains and being very dizzy.

Most figured Brown was scared to death of Norris, then considered boxing's P4P king. The symptoms seemed consistent with a major anxiety attack.

About a year later, Brown was a huge underdog when he finally stepped into the ring with Norris. You wondered if he would freeze and fall in the first round, considering the malady he suffered earlier.

Brown knocked Norris cold in the 5th. So much for freezing.

I was always disappointed in Brown for not showing up for the rematch. Norris boxed brilliantly, staying away from Brown's power, but Simon seemed to just go through the motions and gave back the title with little more than a shrug.

The remainder of his career was just mediocre. Brown seemed satisfied for being remembered as the guy who shocked the world by knocking out Terry Norris.

Actually SeniorPipino, Brown knocked Norris out cold in the 4th not the 5th.

Am I right in thinking that Brown and Maurice Blocker were best mates when they fought?

Would have liked to have seen Simon Brown in with Lloyd Honeyghan just after Brown captured the IBF welterweight belt in 1988.

Brown and Blocker were very good friends, I remember Brown being in tears after he won because he felt bad stopping his friend.

Early in his career Brown was brought in as an opponent for Sean O'Sullivan the Olympic silver medalist, it seems a bad bit of match making with hindsight. As Brown dominated O'Sullivan for a 3rd round knockout.

He was awesome. Great power and precision punching along with good hand speed and a decent set of whiskers. Unfortunately he didn't get some of the better fights until too late in his career. I remember the beat down he gave Tyrone Trice almost 30 years ago. Definitely a marquee performance.
