Kell Brook vs Jessie Vargas

So I have seen rumours flying around of talks between Brook and Vargas in the UK for late July early August. Personally I think its a decent fight and chance to pick up another belt along the way to unify.

Out of all the names Vargas is not the biggest but is a champ which I am assuming will be the sell.

Brook wins via mid-late stoppage for me!

Brook would force a stoppage.

Definite step in the right direction. I fancy Brook to stop him too.

It'll be Brook's 2nd biggest win and give him another title, but it's still only a step in the right direction rather than actually being a big fight by itself.

If Brook wins, then he really should be fighting another good fighter, at the same level or better, before the end of the year.

Definitely, it would be disappointing to see him step down a level again after he wins it, but j imagine that will be the case with Hearn.

2nd best opponent to date.

Still a step in the right direction, but no extra title.

Good fight, with the Thurman/Porter situation and Manny/Bradley having just fought each other, coupled with the fact that Garcia and Cotto wouldnt come to the UK to fight Brook. It is the best opponent they could get, since he seems to only want to fight at home now.

It would be his 2nd best opponent...beats him and gives his chance to fight Khan a bit more clout

Garcia is the biggest fight in the division but if he really isn't a available then Vargas seems satisfactory. Especially if they can get Vargas over here.

Wouldn't be too excited about Peterson.

Berto would be alright a given he's coming off an exciting win that got many people interested. If Kell could give him a good thrashing...

I'd settle for Vargas, then let's say Spence becomes mandatory provided he wins a final eliminate. Then you have a good unification fight and a good upcoming mandatory. Then the next step after this would be the big fight in America, Garcia, as you can raise your profile enormously beating a popular Puerto Rican (in this case) or Mexican (as Amir Khan will try very soon)...looking at the bigger picture, expect Terence Crawford if successful in his 140 unification with Postol to enter the welterweight ranks as one of the best P4P in the world and this would be a huge fight to establish Brook - if things fall, into place for Brook.

Will definitely be in Sheffield if they bring Vargas over this summer.

How is Garcia better than Thurman or Bradley?

He brings a bigger stage, it'll be huge in New York, and Garcia has those two tasty wins over Khan and Matthysse. Welterweight can be where stars are made and Brook - with his abilities - could do with some of that welterweight glamour. It's one that Brook must travel for.

Anything he does before that would need to be meaningful as it'll help him in negotiations.

Still think the brilliant Crawford is the big one. He'll surely be 147-bound if he gets by Postol. Of all the names out there he shows the potential for greatness.

Wouldn't mind a Berto fight either as he just won a fight that people loved.

Might be good to raise the profile of Brook enough to attract Broner back up to 147 as his fights guarantee publicity.

He should be fighting the likes of Thurman and co at this point though. He's been a pro for 12 years now. All this talk of a step in the right direction is a bit silly.

Peterson would admittedly be Brook's second best opponent and KB would have a good chance of outperforming Garcia and Khan, but to me it would still be a 'meh' fight; certainly better than his last three, but not very interesting.

I actually had Peterson drawing in his last bout and not once in his career has he weighed above 144; he'd be significantly smaller than Brook and I doubt that he'd be able to do much effective work offensively.

I'm probably his biggest critic on here, but fighting someone like Thurman is unrealistic at the moment. Brook doesn't deserve a top level opponent. He hasn't earned the right, because he hasn't been fighting many opponents like Vargas or Peterson.

Fighting someone like Vargas or Peterson will help him get in position to get a top level opponent. Fighting a half decent opponent is something that Brook hasn't done for a while, so it would make a nice change for him and make him seem like far less of a joke.

I have my doubts that Brook will even be fighting someone as good as Vargas or Peterson this year though.

Brook beat Porter and he's fighting Thurman so I don't understand your logic there. Thurman isn't exactly a Mayweather or Pacquiao so I don't think it's as unrealistic as you make out.

That was about a year and 9 months ago now.

Why would Thurman want to fight Brook?

Brook is easy to avoid and easy to dismiss. Brook needs to build his profile, which is pretty pathetic considering that he's been a pro for almost 12 years.

Brook's fought one opponent worth bragging about in his whole career (Porter) and if Thurman whoops him then his best win might not even look very good any more.

By the way, who is currently Brook's second best opponent? Senchenko? Jones? Jackiewicz? Matt Hatton?

I think I'd go for Senchenko, but they're all pretty similar.

Shawn Porter
Vyacheslav Senchenko
Rafal Jackiewicz
Carson Jones I
Frankie Gavin
Matthew Hatton
Ionut Dan Ion
Lovemore Ndou
Michael Jennings
Carson Jones II

Good opponent, I wouldn't complain about this if it was made.

Brook's win over Porter surpasses any of Thurman's wins.

But it won't if Thurman beats Porter next month.

Thurman's record is overall far superior to Brook's.

Brook's record is terrible.

"If" being the key word here - Thurman has already pulled out of this fight once.
