Nice little fight, nice choice. Magri was pretty much a blunt instrument but he could punch a bit at 8 stone, I liked his right hand to the body, like a classic English pressure-puncher his style and susceptibility to cuts didn't lend themselves to a long career. You might say he got a little bit unlucky being in the road for a fantastic fighter in Sot Chitalada, but I think one way or another he'd have been lucky to survive too many more defences anyway.

Poor Charlie was pretty much used up by the time he fought Mercedes, beating a great little soon to be champion Santos laciar in a10 rounder. He was managed not too well let's say,too many hard fights before he got his shot at the title !

I spent a couple of months interviewing Charlie a few years back, and he really wasn't well treated to my mind, he was chronically underpaid for the amount of tickets he shifted. He said the same you were saying, that he was past his best by the time he got to the title, and that his management held off on getting him a title shot, because they were on to a good thing, and they didn't want him getting ideas above his station.
He said that his fight with Chitilada was by far the biggest payday of his career which was promoted by a young Warren.

Didn't know this was such a good fight.
Laciar battle was good, too.
Even the Chitalada defeat was exciting as Magri really unloaded, catching the Thai with his chin up several times in the first two rounds before Chitalada went into punching machine mode and chopped him up.

I was at the ally pally for the chitalada fight, scar tissue and sots slashing punches were too much for Charlie,I was a bit of a bok I think, I was also at Wembley when Charlie met an up and coming duke McKenzie who took Charlie apart in 3 rounds !

Great tear up pity about the ending, never good to see a fight stopped due to an accidental cut, superb action, great display of body punching from Magri and accuracy from Mercedes,I had the latter slightly ahead but tough rounds to score both guy threw and landed plenty leather

I thought Magri's fight with Cedeno was even better than the Mercedes one, they were both carbon copies to be fair, Magri is a fun fighter but every punch that's thrown at him seems to land, his defence is his offence, makes for fun fights though,Cedeno just walked through him

I remember watching this at the time and thinking that Magri was slowing and lucky to get Mercedes out of there when he did, which is not to take anything away from what Charlie did in the 7 rounds it lasted, I just don't know if he had another 5 rounds in him; watching it again all these years later does nothing to change that impression; like Saad said think Magri was at his best about 3 years earlier when he beat Laciar and perhaps he stayed at flyweight too long. Bloody awful commentary.

Magri - Cedeno
10 - 9
10 - 9
10 - 9
9 - 10
9 - 10
- - - TKO
48-47 Magri
"This very Oriental face of Frank Cedeno." & "Cedeno looking at him cautiously out of slant eyes." - Harry Carpenter.
Slightly unusual mentions of race from Mr. Carpenter during this fight. Another enjoyable slugfest.

I'll have to check this one out. Magri was fun to watch versus Mercedes, Laciar and Chitalada.

Magri vs Mercedes
10-9 - Magri - wide
9-10 - Mercedes - Magi busy but ate far to many solid quality punces
9-10 - Mercedes
10-10 - Good body work, but still too open from Magri and obvious at times.
10-9 - Magri - Relentless body work taking its toll and chose to switch upstairs to good effect
10-9 - Magri - both men took some hefty blows, but Magri seemed to inflict more damage, particularly with his forehead
Enjoyable viewing but Magri was not anywhere near world class on that showing (the only time I've watched him)
Perhaps it was just because I'd just watched McGuigan and commented on his constant fluid upperbody/head movement, but Magri was utterly inept in that department and his defence was non-existant.
I tend to put head movement in one of three categories.
Like McGuigan, constant perpetually motion,
The likes of Mayweather who was reactionary, responding to his opponents movement
And guys like Magri, who looks as though it's something he has to think about and do.
Early in the fight he was upright and static and then all of a sudden dip to the side or rotate underneath and throw a punch, it was deliberate and thought out.
Later in the fight, as it descended into a slugfest, he never thought to move and just stood up to punches in the face. At one point Mercedes threw a quadruple jab and landed every one. I wondered how long he could have continued throwing them before Magri would have thought to move
He won by using good pressure and put together some nice punches but utterly lacking in defence and movement.

Tremendous tear up, for sure. Clean punching, furious pace. Shame about the inconclusive ending.
Ah well, Cerdeno v Magri offered similar quality, and was conclusive enough. Against Magri.
Magri had some defeats to Mexcians, by stoppage. We're these exciting? Anyone seen Magri v Jose Torres and Juan Diaz, before his world title attempts? Have a feeling these cant have been boring.
