Doesn't look half bad for 60!!

I liked him up to the point he made lalonde fight at 168 for two seperate weight division titles in one fight.
In fact I think that was pretty much the start of the same shambles we still have today

I was at that fight and didn't like the idea either just wanted to see a legend fight he wasn't to every ones taste but could certainly fight and had a great chin.

Before my time but when I was growing up and talking up a fighter my dad would always say something along the lines of 'of course, he's nothing like as good as Sugar Ray Leonard was'

I've watched several of his fights on YouTube so have seen for myself since then.

Four Kings by George Kimball is a great book on that era too.

Yep, pops is right.

SRL was one of my fav fighters growing up, that was my era as a kid. But I have since been learning that he is quite disliked by boxing people which kinda shocked me

Some people just don't like flashy boxers, which is fair enough.

Also, as mentioned above, he was fond of using out of the ring shenanigans to get an edge.

And lots of people think he lost against Hagler. I had him winning a close bout but it was one of those fights that could have gone either way.

Personally I love the bloke. In & out of the ring. I'm just gutted I didn't get to meet him when I used to live fairly close to the bloke. Since then I've tweeted him a few times & he's responded. I am a stalker.

Sugar Ray Leonard was the most complete fighter, ever, speed, power, skill, chin, intelligence, fast feet, personality, heart, stamina, the full package, 5 weight world champion, Olympic champion, he came back from a 3 year lay-off and a detached retina to move up in weight and beat the great Hagler, out of the fabulous 4, of him , Hagler, Hearns, Duran, he was the only one to have beat the other 3. Very fan friendly and approachable, looked after his money and still in great shape.

Sugar Ray turned pro early because his Dad was going blind and gold medals weren’t going to help him to see. I know that much. One man’s showboating prick is another man’s legend of boxing, imho

Was he 3 years out the ring when he took on and extended MM Hagler over 15?......surely that’s unheard of!

Happy 60th to the Great Sugar Ray Leonard. Looks in great condition. Tremendous all-round boxer. One of the best I've ever seen.

Currently busy flogging Skechers shoes on UK telly.....but keeping good company as Ringo Starr is on the same payroll.
Thankfully, not ready for a pair myself just yet and my Asics still get good use.

I saw the Sketchers ad for the first time the other day and wasn't sure if it was really him !

I also read the other day that Tessa Sanderson is 60 (and is looking well) - maybe I am getting old !

I believe without checking that he had 1 fight in 5 years against Kevin Howard and looked bad being floored along the way,then he retired again saying he just didn't have it anymore,but after watching Hagler struggle with John Mugabi decided to come back,the rest is history,by the way i have his autograph which he gave me in Vegas in 1988.

Yes you are right, Hagler struggled before against fighters early on, but always comes on strong and weighs them down, they thought he would do the same against leonard, but Leonard is made of much sterner stuff. Leonard loves the fans, always gives them time, saw him once play fighting at the NEC with a man in a wheel chair, spent a lot of time with him laughing and joking, great guy.

Yes the greatest of my time, and put it this way him and the the original Sugar Ray would almost have been 50-50 - he was that good.
