Exactly this. Will show no one should think they are bigger than boxing. Looks as though Golovkin would have to face Jacobs next as WBA would order this if discussions end for a bout with Canelo. After he deals with Jacobs he should solely focus on the WBO title to achieve his goal of unifying all the belts. The real fans know what Canelo is after this and has put a huge dent in his image and adds to GGG's.

I agree that Canelo has little choice, he can't do much without his backers, so he has to toe the line.

However, I will temper it with this - I think perhaps they were still in negotiations, but couldn't agree on a purse split within the deadline.

I think this fight will still happen, perhaps not now this year, but next year I think it will.

It's potentially the biggest fight in boxing outside of the heavyweights. Canelo won't make more fighting anyone other than perhaps Pacquaio, and I don't see Pacquaio wanting that fight at this stage of his career.

it will be interesting to see if the titles keep proliferating despite GGG mopping up all the trinkets. I expect the WBA will have at least two other champions anyway.

I think Canelo knows his comments on 'pursuing the fight' despite the ever-so-inconvenient 'ticking clock' of the WBC would come back to haunt him if he doesn't go ahead with this. There's nowhere to hide now, no other opponent to choose that he can conveniently say is the right option for him.

What I don't understand though is why, with the WBC title going to GGG, this means the deadline to make the fight is taken away? Why does the other guy holding the title make a difference to any enforced deadline by the WBC? it's the same fight...

Would be ideal if all this happened. However with Eubank jr re-signing with Matchroom yesterday the Saunders rematch ain't happening anytime soon.

Because previously, the deadline was enforced, and the penalty was having to relinquish the belt. That is now gone, so the deadline is gone. GGG has the belt, and has to have a mandatory I believe next.
