A slight correction. Ellis won the elimination tournament (and the world title) against Jerry Quarry, and then defended the title against Floyd Patterson. I don´t see the decision for Ellis as controversial, as I see it Ellis won a close decison. Howard Cosell was commentator, and he did not like the decision because he was a close friend of Floyd.
I believe as you that a young Joe Frazier would have been too strong for Floyd.

Frazier would destroy him inside of 7.

They fought with a similar style, but Frazier would be too big and powerful for Patterson in my opinion, particularly by 1970 when Patterson was past his prime.

Frazier...KO-1...would have been similar to the two Liston-Patterson fights (when Floyd was still in his '20's and in his 'prime')...
The first time Frazier hits him hard---FIGHT OVER!!! (I didn't even need a crystal ball for this one...Floyd never had the division's best chin!)
