John L. GARDNER Where is he now?

I am writing a book that includes prize - fighters with the surname Gardner, a chapter in my book. My publishing company told me that I need written permission to use living people in my book. I've tried finding contact information on John L. Gardner, former British and European Heavyweight Champion, but no luck, or his son Ross Gardner.
Everyone says last they heard he was living in Gateshead running a pub.
Does anyone have an email address for John Lewis Gardner, the former British/European Heavyweight Champion, 35 - 4 (29 KO's)???
I really would like to add him to my book, I already have World Light Heavyweight Champion George Gardner, British/European Heavyweight Champion Jack Gardner, "KO King" Tony Gardner, and others.

I noticed you have same surname. Is he your long lost dad? If so you should try Jeremy Kyle

I haven't listened to it myself, but Steve Bunce had Gardner on his ESPN podcast back in August 2014. Perhaps that might point you in the right direction.

Me too. Buncey mentioned it on the Colin Murray show on Talk Sport, so I checked it out.

You don't need written permission to mention someone's name in a book, your publisher is talking shite.

jamesmcdonnell is absolutely correct -- you don't need written permission to write about ANYBODY, but if you libel them there can be serious consequences. Your "publisher" sounds like a fy-by-night wannabe.I have written six non-fiction books for top publishing houses in Canada and the US (including co-authoring George Chuvalo's 2013 autobiograpy), and the only "permission" ever required was for reprinting copyrighted photos.
Good luck with your project!

Thank you for the advice. Yes, it's a self publishing company. She told me that "written permission" is so they won't get sued.
The "written permission" on copyrighted material, especially photographs is going to really hurt my book.
Jack Gardner, the former British and European Heavyweight Champion, I have tons of photographs in his biography, but don't know which ones are copyrighted. Some I just pulled off the internet of him on simply google searches, and then they are gone a few years later. Other photos are from eBay, which are no longer around.
John L. Gardner is a public figure in England, in a sense, but I'd still like to get his permission, especially on photographs that are probably all copyrighted by now.

Good luck, Corey. Personally, I don't see the value in a self-publishing company - to me it is better either to get a proper publisher who will deal with all the legals like photo copyright, waivers/disclaimers, or to publish yourself and sort out your own printer, proof-readers, legals, photos, cover, promo etc. Pitch Publishing may be a good publisher to try if you go the former route. I did the latter when I did Kirkland Laing's biography, and ended up with the product I wanted. So both can work. Hope it goes well for you.

Any publisher who tells you that you need to have written permission just to mention someone's name, isn't worth shite.
You may as well publish it yourself, don't pay them a cent.
Photographs are an entirely different matter, you need to be VERY careful, because you need permission to use other people's photographs, this is the kind of thing a proper publisher would do.
The best thing to do, is find out where he is, speak to him if you can, and ask to use some of his own personal photographs. That's what I did with the Charlie Magri book, just used Charlie's own or ones he has permission to use from the photographer in question.

Don't pull images from google, you're courting disaster if you use images where you don't know the provenance of them.

The permission you need for photographs is not from Gardner, but from the photographer. Unless they are his own personal photographs, he has no say.

Seems to be a lot of writers on this site ... Sort of makes me feel unedumacated with my bad spelling and all ,, still thats what you get when you don't like school and leave at 14 to go to work , ..
Now if anyone would like to write a book about me ,I'm up for it

, don't think it will sell well , but it would do my ego good , Not much to put in it , but i suppose it could start with something like this .
According to most ,,Coneye is a Pratt ,,, and finish with According to most Coneye is still a Pratt ..

I would definitely advise against going with one of these pay upfront publishing companies. The 'advice' they offer is nothing more than one can easily find on-line and you are essentially paying for a stock of pre-printed copies of your book. I went the self-publishing route for my novel using Amazon / Createspace, you don't pay anything upfront and your book is print on demand; admittedly a novel contains far fewer potential legal problems than your book does. The only photo I have is the cover art and it's licensed from one of those photo stock sites.
Any images you can find which are 'creative commons' are free to use with just a reference to the source, basically any photo on wikipedia etc falls under this category; although I'm sure that your material may be hard to find that way...

Well the advice has been, that he doesn't need to find John L Gardner, as he doesn't need his permission to use his name in the book. To that end, it's probably going to save the guy a hell of a lot of time he'd otherwise waste trying to find John, then asking him for a permission on something he doesn't need permission for, or wouldn't actually allow him to use photographs of the guy.
Perhaps if you had something useful to contribute yourself, you wouldn't waste your own time criticising other people for lack of knowledge of where Gardner is.
