I'm not a serious fighter, but was having a move about with another southpaw at my MA class the other night and was totally flummoxed. I've only ever faced orthodox before, we totally cancelled each other out. There were lots of junior witter style moments of inactivity.

Can't any of you more experienced fighters tell me what I need to do next time please? Or give examples of southpaw vs southpaw fights I can watch?

Don't think to much about what he's doing, just box your usual way and let him work you out.
Jab's will work well, make him open up.

My Mrs sometimes comes away with some belters! 'Why did he not punch him harder there' etc.... The best one I've heard was years ago at a Scott Harrison fight and some massive steroid head infront of me shouted 'punch em in the fuckin heed'

No mate if he's tall and rangy he probably likes to sit back and counter punch,so you doing the same will just lead to not a lot of work and loads of posturing. If I was you I would come in throwing 3-4 punches at a time. If you only throw 1 or 2 it's easier for him to pick you off. Be prepared for shots to miss but carry on throwing the punches or you will just get picked off

I wouldn't do that to start with, as he'll be sharper at the start, and laying back will give him something to hit at. I know its not easy but try and get inside long arms and make him work, it won't be easy, but you'll get him into position he might not feel comfortable in.

Bob and weave in to close the distance, feint to the body shoot for the head

Point towards his shoes and tell him his laces are undone,and when he looks down bash him

Southpaw vs southpaw all other things being equal (which of course they seldom are) the dude who uses his right hand better wins

Nice one. That should be me then. I just feel so damn close to his left, when facing an orthodox their right seems so much further back. Thanks mate

Short right hook when you get inside - he'll be used to catching straight shots with the backhand, not hooks. Of course, be prepared for the same yourself!

Doesn't really matter as long as he reacts to the body feint by which time your other hand should be on its way to his head, simplest one is to keep jabbing his body then when you feint one you can throw your backhand over the top or even turn your fainting jab into a hook to the head. Hope that made sense.

Use your footwork. he's used to people moving as right handers same as you. fast feet in, work his body and finish off upstairs.

Or as my trainer said before my first match, "Jab, move and don't get f*cking hit"

Stand on his right foot and make him go the other way. They hate it.

Switch.

I'm southpaw, but right handed. I find southpaws easier as my lead is faster, and stronger. The opponents feel the jab, and lead right hook, and think "fornicate, I'm not getting caught with that backhand"...In reality they don't need to worry about that as I'm more or less fighting with one arm.

Surround the ring with floor to ceiling mirrors. Both of you then look at the mirrors rather than your live opponent. The reflection will make you think your opponent is orthodox and that you are also orthodox. Hey presto, problem solved!
