I see in Boxrec Biography where he won a Boston amateur tournament when he was 15. When did he leave Canada? Did he have any amateur fights in Canada there coming to Boston?

Clay Moyles book on Sam is excellent, you'll find the answers in there. Sam left home and began his life on the road at 13.

One of the true greatest boxers of all time. A top 5 all time great no matter how you look at it.

Sam was born in Weymouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. During his career he often returned home to visit family and owned property there. He cancelled a tour and went home when his father passed away. It was only because his relatives were unable to afford it that he was buried by friends in Boston. His other nickname was The Boston Bone-Crusher.
