After the very controversial decision for professional boxers to fight in the Rio olympics, let's use this thread to put down which boxer have stated there interest in fighting there.

First up.

Amir Khan - Pakistan.

Pacman was interested last month.

So potentially

Klitschko, the boring spoiler. I hope he follows through, will be interesting to see how his low output, clinch when scared style will go.

Klitschko doesn't have the output to compete in the Olympics at his age.

Agreed. This will be an issue for any twelve round pro, though, not just the low output dinosaurs. If one trains for a marathon then it will be hard to compete well in the sprints.

I wonder if Audley Harrison would fancy it?

That would be some story if he came back & won another Olympic gold.

He never really got out of the amateur mould as a professional & he probably could still be effective in a short fight against amateur opposition.

Pac is not interested anymore.

Lomachenko actually thinks that many professionals wouldn't be able to handle daily weigh-ins, multiple fights, higher pace and short fights. Some could lose, and it will keep most of professionals away.

How about a gold medal for David Price at heavyweight?

Only 2 more qualifying tournaments isn't there? Venezuela and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan isn't open to pros so only Olympic chance of qualifying is in the comp in Venezuela in 4 weeks (first week in July ) surely too early for any pros.

changes will happen in 2020 with pros having ample time to prepare, qualify and adjust

It would be somewhat of a hollow win if you were the only pro competing in your weight division at Rio when you won Gold.

Only a top top pro would beat the top amateurs over the 3x3 format in olympics.

Strange decision by panel to change ruling. .. why?

I'm torn on this matter and i know that's not the OP's goal to discuss with this post but on one hand I love the idea to finally get a chance to see the best fight the best for pride only. That would be amazingly special to see but there's also something great about watching amateurs compete for gold with the possibility of becoming stars in the way Ali and SRL have.

I dont really enjoy amateur boxing. I remember watching it live at the london games 2012 for the first time and it was just too frenetic for me. It seems to favour high output guys, quantity versus quality. Kinda makes me wonder how Rigondeaux had so much success in that side of the sport.

If someone wanted to im sure they could fight against that, ageism for starters, but 40 is upper age limit for amateurs, we arent talking about amateurs, so i dont think they could legally be refused on age.

the only two sports that have upper age limits are boxing (under 40s) and football (under 23s).

When the age discrimination law was introduced there was an exception where sporting events were concerned. It was said age banding in sporting events would remain lawful just as gender banding in sporting events remained lawful following equalities act.
